Here are two of my least favorites:

Buffalo Springfield - For What It's Worth

There's something happening here
But what it is ain't exactly clear
There's a man with a gun over there
Telling me I got to beware
I think it's time we stop
Children, what's that sound?
Everybody look, what's going down?
There's battle lines being drawn
Nobody's right if everybody's wrong
Young people speaking their minds
Getting so much resistance from behind
It's time we stop
Hey, what's that sound?
Everybody look, what's going down?
What a field day for the heat (Ooh ooh ooh)
A thousand people in the street (Ooh ooh ooh)
Singing songs and they carrying signs (Ooh ooh ooh)
Mostly say, "Hooray for our side" (Ooh ooh ooh)
It's time we stop
Hey, what's that sound?
Everybody look, what's going down?
Paranoia strikes deep
Into your life it will creep
It starts when you're always afraid
Step out of line, the men come and take you away
We better stop
Hey, what's that sound?
Everybody look, what's going down?
You better stop
Hey, what's that sound?
Everybody look, what's going down?
You better stop
Now, what's that sound?
Everybody look, what's going down?
You better stop
Children, what's that sound?
Everybody look, what's going down?

Horse with No Name by the Animals

On the first part of the journey
I was looking at all the life
There were plants and birds and rocks and things
There was sand and hills and rings
The first thing I met was a fly with a buzz
And the sky with no clouds
The heat was hot and the ground was dry
But the air was full of sound
I've been through the desert on a horse with no name
It felt good to be out of the rain
In the desert you can't remember your name
'Cause there ain't no one for to give you no pain
La la la la la la...
After two days in the desert sun
My skin began to turn red
And after three days in the desert fun
I was looking at a river bed
And the story it told of a river that flowed
Made me sad to think it was dead
You see I've been through the desert on a horse with no name
It felt good to be out of the rain
In the desert you can't remember your name
'Cause there ain't no one for to give you no pain
La la la la la la...
After nine days I let the horse run free
'Cause the desert had turned to sea
There were plants and birds and rocks and things
There was sand and hills and rings
The ocean is a desert with its life underground
And a perfect disguise above
Under the cities lies a heart made of ground
But the humans will give no love
You see I've been through the desert on a horse with no name
It felt good to be out of the rain
In the desert you can't remember your name
'Cause there ain't no one for to give you no pain
La la la la la la...
Thank you all very much
Take care of yourselves, take care

Do you have any?

Mine is from nursery rhyme Jack n Jill. Terrible story when I heard it when I was a kid.

I have to nominate The Final Countdown by Europe.

We're heading for Venus (Venus)
And still we stand tall
'Cause maybe they've seen us
And welcome us all, yeah
With so many light years to go
And things to be found (to be found)
I'm sure that we all miss her so

Offense #1: Rhyming 'heading for Venus' with 'maybe they've seen us'. Huh? You want to go to Venus becayse they Venusians have seen us? So if they hadn't seen us, you wouldn't want to go there? And the rhyme itself is what one would expect from an eight-year-old.

Offense #2: One does not measure the distance to Venus in light-years. Sure, you can, but since Venus is, on average, about 0.000008 light-years from Earth it's like measuring one's height in miles (except even more statistically ridiculous).

A little ditty 'bout Jack & Diane
Two American kids growing up in the heartland
Jack, he's gonna be a football star
Diane's debutante, back seat of Jacky's car

Suckin' on chili dog outside the Tastee Freez
Diane sitting on Jacky's lap
Got his hands between her knees
Jack he says
"Hey, Diane, let's run off behind the shady trees
Dribble off those Bobby Brooks
Let me do what I please"

Saying "Oh yeah
Life goes on, long after the thrill of living is gone"
Saying "Oh yeah
Life goes on, long after the thrill of living is gone"
They walk on

Jack he sits back, collects his thoughts for the moment
Scratches his head, and does his best James Dean
"Well then, there, Diane, we ought to run off to the city"
Diane says
"Baby, you ain't missing nothing"
But Jack he says, yeah

"Oh yeah, life goes on, long after the thrill of living is gone"
"Oh yeah"
He's saying "Life goes on, long after the thrill of living is gone"

Oh, let it rock, let it roll
Let the bible belt come and save my soul
Holdin' on to sixteen as long as you can
Change is coming 'round real soon
Make us women and men

"Oh yeah, life goes on, long after the thrill of living is gone"
"Oh yeah"
He's saying "Life goes on, long after the thrill of living is gone"

A little ditty 'bout Jack and Diane

"I Drink Alone"

I drink alone, yeah
With nobody else
I drink alone, yeah
With nobody else
You know when I drink alone
I prefer to be by myself

Every morning just before breakfast
I don't want no coffee or tea
Just me and good buddy Weiser
That's all I ever need
'Cause I drink alone, yeah
With nobody else
Yeah, you know when I drink alone
I prefer to be by myself

The other night I laid sleeping
And I woke from a terrible dream
So I caught up my pal Jack Daniel's
And his partner Jimmy Beam
And we drank alone, yeah
With nobody else
Yeah, you know when I drink alone

I prefer to be by myself

The other day I got invited to a party
But I stayed home instead
Just me and my pal Johnny Walker
And his brothers Black and Red
And we drank alone, yeah
With nobody else
Yeah, you know when I drink alone
I prefer to be by myself

My whole family done give up on me
And it makes me feel oh so bad
The only one who will hang out with me
Is my dear Old Grand-Dad
And we drink alone, yeah
With nobody else
Yeah, you know when I drink alone
I prefer to be by myself - George Thorogood, who should also consider being by himself when he "sings"

Almost all of the third-grade rhymes from Mr. Mojo Risin. Sorry, the music was good.

"In the Year 2525"

"There she was justa walkin' down the street singin' do-wah-diddy-diddy-dum-diddy-doo."

I got in my car and I drove like mad, till I reached Julie's place
She ran to me, with tears in her eyes, and bruises on her face
All at once, I saw him there, sneaking up behind me, watch out!
Then Julie yelled, he's got a gun, and she stepped in front of me
Suddenly, a shot rang out, and I saw Julie falling
I ran to her, I held her close, when I looked down, my hands were red,
And here's the last words Julie said

From Run Joey Run, possibly the finest of the 1970s teen tragedy ballads.

Yup. That's the one. Not just dumb but lazy. "Horse With No Name" is proof that friends don't let friends write lyrics while stoned.

On the first part of the journey
I was looking at all the life
There were plants and birds and rocks and things
There was sand and hills and rings

Seriously. Even Captain Obvious is ashamed.

Rocks "and things." Because I guess "other stuff" was too hard to rhyme.

"The heat was hot." Wow. Deep, man. Grooovy. Water is wet. Cold is cold.

Seriously. Those lyrics make your average Sesame Street lesson look like Shakespeare.

I love Carole King. A rare genius. Tapestry is one of the best albums of the 1970s. All true.

But "Home Again," which is otherwise a great song, has this bit that has always annoyed me:

Snow is cold, rain is wet

I think she must have been listening to "Horse With No Name" and her brain switched off for a second.

The most discomfiting song for me by "America" is "Sister Golden Hair".

"Well, I tried to make it Sunday, but I got so damn depressed
That I set my sights on Monday and I got myself undressed
I ain't ready for the altar but I do agree there's times
When a woman sure can be a friend of mine

Well, I keep on thinkin' 'bout you
Sister Golden Hair surprise
And I just can't live without you
Can't you see it in my eyes?
I've been one poor correspondent
And I've been too, too hard to find
But it doesn't mean you ain't been on my mind

Will you meet me in the middle?
Will you meet me in the air?
Will you love me just a little?
Just enough to show you care?
Well, I tried to fake it
I don't mind sayin', I just can't make it"

etc etc

So here's some loser wanting a friends with benefits arangement, I think, and we'll have a song about it?

Here's my version:
Well, I tried to make it Monday, but I got so damn depressed
That I set my sights on some day, and I got myself undressed
I ain't ready for employment but I do agree there's times
When a woman sure can loan to me a dime

Well, I keep on thinkin' 'bout you
Sister Golden Hair surprise
And I just need a few dollars
Can't you see it in my eyes?
I've been one poor unemployed boy
And a jobs been too hard to find
That will let me sleep until it's after nine.

Will you loan me twenty dollars?
Will you help me pay my rent?
Will you let me use your car?
Or just enough to buy some blow?
Well, I tried to fake it
I don't mind sayin', I just need a sofa to sleep upon."
