I was reading (and posted) on the "Weird Tastes in music, anyone?" thread and instead of hijacking it, decided to start a separate thread.

The top 40 is necessarily comprised of songs which have mainstream appeal, and that usually excludes the weird/extreme/harsh stuff. Occasionally, an oddball sneaks in.

I submit David Bowie's "Fame." It's ubiquity on the airwaves led to familiarity which blunted its impression of weirdness at the time of its release in 1975, but whenever I hear it now, it floors me that such a bizarre tune became a huge, mainstream hit.

Honorable mentions might include The B-52's "Rock Lobster," Fleetwood Mac's "Tusk" and Devo's "Whip It." King Missile's "Detachable Penis," Barnes and Barnes' "Fish Heads" and Devo's "Jocko Homo" were weird but they were outside the mainstream.

So, any other challengers to "Fame" for the mainstream weirdness crown?

YouTube - Weird Al Yankovits Im fat Lyrics

Weird Al parodies popular songs, then his songs end up in the mainstream. This is fitting.
