I removed my original post of this song. I love the song and think it conveys so much of what Boston tries to convey in so many of their songs. A collection of songs that tell a greater story, but each tells their own story as well. Reflective of earlier times, many of the themes pertain to how many are reflective now of earlier times.
I remembered Brad Delp's death a couple of years back and researched it quickly. I was not prepared for what I found. I caution you not to look unless you can handle very, very graphic details. Let me just summarize by saying he took his own life as he felt he had absolutely nothing more to live for, despite his kids, ex-wife, and a planned marriage just months away..
While so many people have related to this song over the years, because of the first verse:
" I looked out this morning and the sun was gone
Turned on some music to start my day
I lost myself in a familiar song
I closed my eyes and I slipped away"
after reading details of Brad Delp's death, I decided to post this again in this forum w/feeling to state another message.
"So many people have come and gone
Their faces fade as the years go by
Yet I still recall as I wander on
As clear as the sun in the summer sky"
and
I closed my eyes and she slipped away
She slipped away
-written by - Tom Scholz
Life is precious. If anyone is clinically depressed or know others who are, please get professional help. Don't be someone others have to remember and your face, your voice, what you write and feel, and who you are "fades as the years go by."
This time when you hear the song, think of those who are lost in one way or another. If that doesn't create feeling, I don't know what does.
And rather than read more press releases about Brad Delp, I chose to remember him with the words, feelings and observations of fellow Boston bandmates:
When my grandma played it one day while she was cooking I said "That's the Cosby song" and she said "No baby that's Nappy Brown" I was convinced I was right though
Because I felt my last post about Boston could seem like a downer to many, I wanted to also post one of their beautiful ballads: "Living FOR You," from their 4th LP/CD, "Walk On"
From the CD liner notes and also those on Boston's website I quote MIT-trained and mastermind of Boston, Tom Scholz:
"LIVIN' FOR YOU
(Scholz) "This song is about loving someone, not losing someone. Sung by Fran, from the heart."
From the advanced recording and musical technology Scholz used at the time, to the simple melody filled with beautiful lyrics, enjoy this ballad.
"Livin' without you never could be so wrong
Don't need to say it, I never waited so long
Thinking about you in everthing I do
Love for giving"
"Knew it so easy, don't have to think it through
Love is for giving
I know I'm just livin' for you"
"Love is for giving I know I'm just livin' for you"I]
An interesting observation about this song and why I've used caps for the word, "FOR," is many people have posted the lyrics or the song with the wrong title. Many people have listed it as, "Livin' Without You." Read Scholz's words again. This "is about loving someone."
When my grandma played it one day while she was cooking I said "That's the Cosby song" and she said "No baby that's Nappy Brown" I was convinced I was right though
