the 80's to the early 90's was when, in my opinion, hard rock hit it's peak.. Metallica, Guns N roses, Def Leppard, the rise of bands like Pearl Jam, Nirvana, Alice in chains, and Stone Temple Pilots.
Don't get me wrong there was some great rock in the 70's and 80's, but the best somewhat harder rock peaked in the late 80's to early 90's... great time to go to live concerts. Although many would argue Metallica's earlier work was better, I think they peaked with the black album personally, though I love For Whom The bell Tolls, Creeping Death, etc.
I didn't go to nearly as many concerts as I wish I would have, even in the mid 90's when I hit high school there was a lot of good material available I missed out on... and my parents never went to concerts so as a kid I didn't get the opportunity during the peak years (around 1990) when I was 9 years old.
I love all hard rock up to the latest stuff, though admittedly the new stuff is more generic sounding with not as many true good guitarists and drummers.... you don't get the guitar and drum solos and good mastering work on the final albums.. everything is mastered to sound 'loud' rather than bring out fine detail in such works of art as Guns N Roses "November rain" .. I'm also a sucker for good guitar solos like so many songs from the 70's to the early 90's had... Damn Yankees "come again" has a good guitar solo. (Ted Nugent)
Avenged Sevenfold is a good example of a newer band which has some great guitar and drum work but the mastering on their albums sounds horrible. The song "bat country" is well done, but mastered poorly on the CD... sounds like a crappy compressed loud MP3. Nothing like FLAC files of vinyl rips of great bands like Pink Floyd and well mastered work of the 80's which sounds like it has 'life' and 'soul' including a lot of the pop stuff from bands like "heart"
Sorry but I have to throw this classic in there too from the greatest era in rock..
