This is what Def Leppard sounded like when I liked them, before they churned out craptastic songs a decade later (like "Let's Get Rocked," the one where Phil Collen raps).
I was always of the opinion that their immediate and steep decline--which happened after the 3rd album--was in the rhythm section. Losing a drummer's arm is an effective way turn rockers into power-balladeers.
(Their equals include early Scritti Politti, which had a sound that in part was shaped by Ned "Ebn" Liben of EBN/OZN. The contributions can be heard in the sharp, staccato mid-range Fairlight lines that are intermittent beginning a little after minute one on the latter's AEIOU Sometimes Y, and more densely in the last, two and a half minute passage.)
