The great singers, where would they be without them?
Even the guys/gals that write their own songs, would
we appreciate those great voices, great musicianship,
if the songs weren't great?
I thought a thread dedicated to the composers and the
lyricists was overdue. I did a search to see if this had
been done before, and nothing came up on-point. So,
whattya think? Who are your favorites and why? Post
some lyrics, link a clip, to give these people their due..
Johnny Mercer.. "Moon River, wider than a mile, I'm crossing
you in style some day. Old dream maker, you heartbreaker,
wherever you're goin', I'm goin' your way"... (and here's the
best lyric).. "Two drifters, off to see the world, there's such
a lot of world to see. We're after the same rainbow's end,
waitin' round the bend, my huckleberry friend, Moon River,
and me.."
Nothing so profound, right? But the feeling it evokes, the way
the words fall together organically, just beautiful.
He was best know as a lyricist, but he wrote some tunes, and
believe it or not, Johnny could sing. But the words he wrote are
part of our lives, part of the American fabric.
Other lyrics by Mercer, Summer Wind, That Old Black Magic,
Fools Rush In, Accentuate the Positive, Somethin's Gotta Give,
This Time the Dream's On Me, I Wanna Be Around, I Thought
About You, Drinking Again, Dream, Come Rain or Come Shine..
it just goes on and on with this guy. He's been gone for over
thirty years now, but his art will be with us for a long time..

Irving Berlin
Berlin just had a knack for capturing a particular mood.
White Christmas, Puttin' On the Ritz, Blue Skies, Annie Get Your Gun and many others: All of these were perfect for the shows they were in, and are still popular to this day.
Warren Zevon
Zevon billed himself as a purveyor of "heavy metal folk."
It's true that so many of his songs tell stories, some of them rather dark, and it's also true that his lyrics are well-crafted and his message can be potent.
Many know him for "Excitable Boy,", but "Splendid Isolation," "Vast Indifference of Heaven," "Carmelita," and "Desperadoes Under the Eaves" present another aspect of Zevon, literate, heartfelt and precise.
Neil Young
The remarkable quality of Young's songs are, for me, their unmistakable tone.
The lyrics don't always make sense in and of themselves, but put them together, combine them with his guitar and band, and they paint a vivid aural picture. "Powderfinger," "Sugar Mountain," "Rust Never Sleeps" "TransAm" and so many more, they all effortlessly morph into a moment in time.
Kris Kristofferson and Hank Williams, also Townes Van Zandt and Rodney Crowell.
