I've long ago cut the cable, but my roommate hasn't and is paying over $100 a month for cable, when he only watches a couple channels, which seems to me a big waste of money. The package he has includes a great many channels neither of us would ever watch, because of course you have to pay for a lot of stuff you don't want to get what you do want.

So I'm thinking why not just get one of those digital antennas I've heard about and ditch the cable company?

Does anyone use one of these? What channels can you get on it here in Naples? It sure would save my friend a lot of money if he could get the two channels he watches.

Hi and yes, even as far back as East Naples, it should work. They need to be outdoor and point towards FM. The FreetoAir channels should include

Fox, CBS, PBS NBC You may need a specialist in to calibrate the direction. But HD was available when i done this. I had a Wineguard multi directional antenna, with slight amplification, off a regular wall socket. But HD was crystal clear. This was in 2005, so probably even better now.

Thank you so much for that, our cable is packaged in with our internet via CenturyLink, and I'd love to get rid of it so we can afford to increase our download speed. If I can get him his Fox News he'd be happy. I never watch TV myself, being that I have an 8.2tb video server and know where to find anything I want online.

Now I just need to find out if our HOA will have a problem with a roof antenna. I gather the indoor ones aren't going to work so well.

Here is a recent thread on topic...might be informative.
If you bump into an HOA restriction, I posted that a neighbor does have an HD antenna in his attic, fwiw.

You can get the Fox local channel , but not FOX news.
I have an outside antenna and can pick up all the local affiliates of NBC, CBS, ABC,PBS and Fox. The CW channel comes in but not well

I would say buying online is going to be your best bet.

Example

Amazon.com: Winegard SS-3000 Amplified Indoor UHF/VHF Antenna: Electronics

Thanks, but I should have elaborated... I don't live in Naples but occasionally drop in for a weekend. I don't want to bother with timing the deliveries, etc. or bringing one via plane so I thought I rather drop into a store and pick one up.

Fwiw, the BestBuy site lists a page of various HD tv antennas...no idea as to which one works best/would fit your needs...
BB doesn't always have the stuff 'in store', so I would rec'd some perusing of their site, some investigation into 'which model', order it and pick it up when you get to town.

HHGregg didn't show any on their site, and Bill Smith chooses to show very little of anything on their site.
