I have been reading this forum for about 1 year as we prepare for a move to Naples Florida. I have 2 adult kids, 22,24 that are coming with us and we are in our late 40's. From reading all the posts, you would think Naples is the following:
Boring
Prejudicial
Crime ridden
Disriminatory against pretty much everyone
Too hot
Too expensive
Too crowded
Etc, etc etc

I have been to Naples several times and found it to be:
FABULOUS weather
Beautiful beaches
Great shopping
Quiet atmosphere
Upscale housing
Appropriate Commerce
Basically ...a wonderful place to live.
We are from St Louis, the #2 Murder capital in the world, although we live in a very nice area of st louis. There is no beach, weather that fluctuates as much as 3o degrees or more in one day, EXTREME humidity with no Gulf of Mexico, just a filthy River to boat in -- last summer we averaged 100 degrees. And warm summers that last for 3 months and then the bad weather starts up again for 9 months. We have a VERY high amount of folks on welfare and sections 8 and a lack of employment (as wella s the whole country) THe big difference is you can only go to the Arch so many times before its just a big silver U in the sky.
My point:
WHY are so many of you so miserable??! Your positives FARRRRRR outweigh the negatives! Is it really that bad?! We would love to make friends when we move but dont want to run into an entire city of miserable people. What am I missing?

Basically, what you are 'missing' is that, obvious from the lack of activity on the Naples forum, few Naples residents post here and, as is generally true with anyplace or product, more people with complaints go out of their way to broadcast them than people without complaints.
So you're missing hearing from those that also think Naples is great.
A few things on your list are true....Naples is relatively expensive , it does get crowded between Jan and April(gee, can that be because Naples is all you say that's good?) and...oh my goodness....surprise, surprise.....it is hot in Florida (in the summer)

sbapasto, I read your post and just had to laugh! You are so right. I feel like that frequently when reading the posts on the Naples forum. We moved here over two years ago from Atlanta, despite the things that are frequently said on this forum. I think it is all about your attitude and your perspective. Coming from Atlanta, this place really is paradise. I readily admit that no place is perfect and that I do get annoyed with some things from time to time, but nothing like I did in Atlanta. I was so mad every time I had to drive there, and I have yet to get that angry driving here. I haven't come across an unusual number of rude people here. In fact, I encountered a lot more rude people in Atlanta. Also I think anything below 70 degrees is cold

I'm another one that loves Naples, some people just like to moan, If they don't like it then move, it'as not that hard get in your car and drive. Naples is stunning and like the previous poster said, it's what you make it and your attitude, if you are friendly, then people are friendly back. I moved here with my family and we knew no-one. So we made an effort, now we have lots of friends and love most things about Naples. I even like the summer, the beaches and pools are empty just for us so called locals to enjoy. I would class myself as well traveled and Naples was the place we decided to move to. No regrets here...

I don't hate it, and I am certainly not miserable her, or I wouldn't have stayed for 25 years. That said, for a variety of reasons (but mainly my commute) we are moving as soon as my son graduates HS.

I loved it here until about a decade ago, when Naples was discovered, and it's gradually lost it's allure. It'd be a nice place to retire, and if I were closer to retirement, I'd stay, but I am not commuting feome here for another 17 years. 25 years is too long!

Oh, and there are 2 season, summer and tourist. The weather in the summer sucks. Period. The weather during tourist is great, but, it's tourist season.....

I came here from Central NJ and am very pleased with Naples. At least once a day I think about how fortunate I am to live here.

What I've noticed and I move ALOT for work and I always come on here and research the area I'm moving, that not many people seem to like where they live. I always come to this site to ask questions, and I almost always hear about the bad and the ugly and rarely the good side. Then when I move to that area and I'm all freaked out that its so bad, I'm shocked to find out its not bad at all and actually pretty doggone nice. I've lived in huge cities with tons of traffics, lots of crime and I think you have to take the good with the bad of everywhere you live. Yes, Naples has alot of traffic but only about 4 months a year. Yes, it has alot of older people, but I'll be old one day. The crime rate is low, the climate is wonderful (yes, I like hot weather), and it is what you make of it. So I take comments on here with a grain of salt and know that ultimately I'll form my own opinion and make the most of everywhere I live.

I was shocked when I looked up the crime stats for St Louis you could live almost anywhere in the US and be safer.

Read my post about life in Naples. A lot of people found it helpful.

I don't hate it here, either, although I'll be leaving when I retire (after 30 years here) as the summer heat has gotten to me.

MartyGras-

St Louis is a little deceiving because we have a city, which is where the crime mostly is and some other nearby areas, and then we have St louis County which is overall much safer. The murder rate in the city is UNBELIEVABLE! I have personally been a victim of grand theft at my place of business, which is in an area with supposedly very low crime. The area I live, Chesterfield, has almost no crime BUT you do move around a lot in your day to day life and it seems the whole of St Louis county/city has very few places anyone would want to live. People from St Louis just know to avoide a lot of areas. It seems like you dont have that -- except Golden gates Estates? I dont mena to offend anyone if Im wrong -- Im basing that off the crime stats and the Naples news. Also, it seems like Naples Park is iffy and I thought that was upscale.
