4. Ugly Mugs
5. Bongo Java near 5 points in East Nashville (safe, but very hard core) I love it.
All the others mentioned I approve as well; enjoy.

Oh I understand just fine, not like I've never been to a coffee house before, and it doesn't make it any less silly or somebody any more the intellectual where or when they read.
The question wasn't where can I find a nice coffee house, it was where can I take a book to read. Is it about sitting down with a nice book or being trendy and having people there to notice?

Sometimes, those of us who read a lot just need to get out of the house. I love reading, I can do it anywhere, but man, I get sick of being stuck in the same place all the time. So it's nice to take my book and sit in a different place. It does a person good to get out of the house once in a while.

I agree about getting out of the house, personally I'd rather hop on the bike and take a nice 20 mile ride somewhere and pop down under a tree for a little relaxation/reading, maybe grab a little picnic lunch. Some just have that coffee house attitude that really makes me question why they do what they do, guess I'm more of a cynic than most.

The TN DMV is also a great place, because if you have DMV business it will take at least two hours before they call your name, then you wont have everything you need (or the 2nd time there; or the 3rd time there) so you have repeat opportunities for reading!

Vandy Library
Downtown Library
Crema (on 2, but best coffee in town - get the cortado)

I am sure East Nashville has lots too, but I don't know it well yet.
The Borders and Barnes & Noble in Franklin have lots of fluffy chairs in which you could curl up and read in!
