Oh well . . . . send us a photo of your fireplace! I went to that Nashville Fireplace place and they have a remote starter. You can sit on the couch and start the fire with a remote.

Wild.
how expensive is the remote?

I think she said about $400? But that was to switch what we have now (a key in the wall) to the remote. Maybe if you have it built that way it would be cheaper?

One of those CLAPPER things would be fun. Clap on - Clap off???

The builder had a standard fireplace package with marble trim and a cable hookup above the mantle for a flatscreen TV. It is very nice looking, but honestly I wouldn't have gotten it except for resale.

We will never, ever use it unless there is some sort of major ice or snow storm that keeps us without power for a few days. We don't have natural gas in our community so gas logs aren't an option.

Thank you everyone for your great suggestions.

I posted this in the general forum and it sounds like its a good value from resale point. Also it depends on the area and in Murfreesboro I am not much sure, will have to dig in.

To clarify - when I said my friends blocked the fire-place (they tried grill first), it was a temporary block like with couch blocking the access to the fireplace. For sure that won't be there forever.

As I have seen, if I do get a fireplace I find it more useful if the hot air is forced towards the inside of the house. I am sure it'll make a big difference to the utility bill.

we got a ventless gas fireplace when we built and use it all the time (when the boss is watching HGTV). We set the temperature to about 62 and hang out in the room with the fireplace so we are only heating that room. We have used it a lot this winter.

I checked with the builder and it would cost $3300 for the ventless gas fireplace (only option). He said that people opting for fireplace is 50/50. I hope there is a saving after using the gas fireplace.

Hearth and Grill Shop for Gas Grills and Gas Fireplace Logs

Hearth & Grill near 100 Oaks is supposed to be a good place to check out. Take care of all your fireplace/grill items.
