I didn't see this post, but I still recommend downtown, but if you guys happen not to want to go there, the Vanderbilt area has a bunch of bars that are cool too and way more resturants than the downtown area.

Have a few, much cheaper, drinks in the area you recommended before you head downtown. If you want a local scene and less jam packed its a much better recommendation. Printer's Alley is nice but stay away from Broadway based on what you are looking for unless you just want novelty.
