I live in suburbs east of Memphis currently, but I may take a position that would require me to move to Nashville. We want a quiet subdivision with good schools, and would have a budget of around 300k for a house. Need 4 bedrooms, 2+ baths. A play room would be awesome as well.

Our current town, Collierville, has a good sense of community and good children's rec athletics. We would feel comfortable with a similar environment.

I would be visiting customers in the Nashville area, and the office which is in Franklin. Where should I start looking?

I would check out Nolensville.

It's like Collierville was 30 years ago.

How similar would Franklin be to living in Collierville? Schools, rec sports?

I don't know anything about Collierville, but with what you're looking for, and your new office being in Franklin, I would definitely suggest starting in Franklin and then spreading out from there if needed. Franklin would be a little more expensive than some other areas, but I suspect you might very well feel it's worth it.

No problem there with kids sport and other activities. There are a number of other things for kids and family around the Nashville area as well; The Adventure Science Center, the Frist Center for the Visual Arts, Cheekwood, Nashville Shores, and some very nice natural areas and state parks. You really shouldn't have too much of a problem with kids sports in most of the areas in and around Nashville unless you go out to the more rural areas.

I think you might have to hunt a little harder for 4 bedrooms at $300,000 BUT it's certainly possible. Fieldstone Farms is a huge older (late 1990's) subdivision with houses from $150,000 to $600,000. Old, established, great location.

Not a lot on the market just now but here's one, a bit over your budget, just to give you an idea:

RealTracs Mid-South Real Estate Property Finder Listing Details

It's 10 minutes to downtown Franklin, maybe 12 - 15 to Cool Springs.

Downtown Franklin is very quaint. Good schools.

PS. Best website to look for houses in the Nashville area is realtracs.com.

Thanks for the link, that is a lot easier to use than realtor.com.

Franklin has EXPLODED with growth over the past 20 years.

I grew up in Memphis, and I remember Collierville well when it was a quaint town a good ways out from Memphis, and am familiar with it now as the area has "filled in" between the big city and the small town.

Franklin is similar. As a result, home prices have spiked, and so has traffic. You will find some choices in Franklin, and it certainly has kid amenities galore. But if you don't need the interstate on a regular basis and actually will be working in Franklin, I think you would find Nolensville to be a great choice. More house for the money, too.

Nolensville is on the brink of a growth spurt as well. It has two excellent elementary schools, and the city leaders are actually implementing a sensible growth plan, unlike those in Spring Hill.

You really should visit the area first to get a feel for yourself.

I'll take a look at Nolensville.

For work it will be really hard to predict a pattern. On any day I could just work from home, or I could have to visit a customer anywhere in the Nashville metro area. I'll probably be stopping in the office in Franklin about once a week.

I'll probably be spending 40 or 50 nights in Nashville in hotels while I sell my house in Collierville, I'm going to spread them out to different areas to get a feel for things.

I think that's wise. You can get used to traffic patterns, too.

I would look in Franklin/Nolensville/Thompson Station. You should be able to find something in that price range. Since your office is in Franklin (I assume Cool Springs) you are pretty centrally located. You may wanted to look at Field Stone Farms, Franklin Green, Founders Point, Spencer Hall, Rogershire, and I think Berry Farms might be in your price point if you want a new development
