I've been practicing family medicine in the Chicago area for the past 25 years and now my eldest daughter is at U of T and my wife and kids want to move to the great state of Tennessee, does anyone have an idea if there is a need for an experienced board certified family practitioner in the Nashville area? We would like to live in an area with good schools obviously and maybe south of the city but we are open to just about anywhere within easy access to the city.

Brentwood is probably a good fit for you if you want to live south of Nashville. If you wanted to be closer in, around what I think of as "hospital row" (Vanderbilt, Vanderbilt Children's, Centennial, St. Thomas, and what used to be Baptist Hospital), you could look at Green Hills or the areas just west of I-440 near West End Avenue. Also, Hillwood.

Many people in the higher income levels send their kids to private school here.

Sorry, I don't know what the need for a family physician is here. I suspect the demand is not quite as great here as in other places.

My practice has usually been community based and not university based so any growing area would be great

I just meant that a lot of the medical office buildings and medical community are around the West End area. There are other hospitals around town, of course, and physician's offices in all areas.

Williamson County (Brentwood and Franklin) is growing and would be the first place I'd look to both live and work if I were in your place.

Most areas around Nashville are growing. I just don't know if there is more need for a family physician in, say, Mt. Juliet, than in Hendersonville. This is beyond my scope of knowledge.

By the way, it's been cold here lately, but not as cold as Chicago. It's almost 50 today.

I almost froze on a trip to Chicago some years ago. It was in May and it was already in the 80s here. I got to Chicago and it was 40 or 50 and, of course, windy. I had just brought along short-sleeve shirts. Still, I like visiting Chicago.

You may check with Vanderbilt. They've been opening primary care type clinics all over of late.

Income isn't the only factor. Many of the issues you need to know well are banned from being discussed on these boards.

Just because someone is a Doctor doesn't mean they want to live in Brentwood. Your choices in Nashville of the type of house and the community you live around is endless. I strongly suggest to anyone new you rent in the Midtown area, or rent/buy a condo on the Aklen corridor or anywhere around Midtown and figure it out for yourself. The market is very tight here for a single family homes, and you must be careful to know the various areas well before you buy. If you're daughter will be at UT thats North Nashville, so a townhouse in Germantown might be ideal for you to start out then buy when you find your preferred neighborhood. .

I bought in a prime area at the height of the market in 2005, a single family. The downside is I was never able to get it fixed up and can't relocate within my area, there is zero inventory. I strongly suggest you buy only whats redone or new, move in ready, only unless you have the connections or can just throw endless money into renovations, plus the wait, in which case you might have to rent or buy elsewhere at least a year. I only bought where I did because I knew it was a triple AAA prime property, so when I cash out I will get 5 times what I paid. The downside is I wont be reinvesting in Nashville, if I stay ll move to Williamson county or just another state altogether. Be very careful where you buy here.

A Dr in Nashville is kind of like being a Songwriter, you're more than welcome but the competition is tough. Vanderbilt cut down the admitting Med school class of 2014 by 10 places and has laid off thousands of people since I moved here. Yet they keep blasting building and expanding.
