It's not crime infested but I know there are some homeless types. It's kinda tourist oriented. Music, restaurants, conventions. The 'honk key tonks" (I have to write it that way) have music from like 10AM but mornings are quieter downtown. Weekend nights are booming. There's a museum, the new music city center (nashvillemusiccitycenter.com), country music hall of fame, you can walk across the bridge to a Titans game, the Preds play downtown at the Bridgestone, there's a symphony hall, concerts at the Ryman, some great hotels, hot chicken! . . . it's happening but it's based on tourism. Sort of like the wharf part of San Francisco. Or Times Square in NY. Does this make sense? If you take out the tourists, I think it would not stay as vibrant. NYC to me would buzz even without tourists, to a point? Not a bad thing, just my perception. Would be quieter in the winter, on Monday and Tuesday nights.

You'd have to go to the Gulch for the Turnip Truck grocery store. Oh, I guess you could go to the farmers market. Hey, Nashville is up and coming or buzzing or something right now so an excellent time to move here! There was an article in Time magazine about 2 weeks ago about it. Anyone giving you flack about moving here????
You should probably stick to Franklin info....

As others noted, multiple grocery stores very close. Once about 4 blocks from the Stahlmann. And there's a Walgreens RIGHT DOWNTOWN!

OPer - You could zip down to Demonbreun, turn right and then ride through the roundabout to Vandy.

Downtown is cool. One of my co-workers lives in the Stahlman and likes it. And, you'll have a front row seat for Live on the Green in the late summer!

I would definitely check it out.

well, I know very little about Nashville so I appreciate *everyone's* input! I live in a VERY touristy city so what you said makes sense to me, CountryGirl2b=. Downtown sounds pretty sweet, I definitely am going to check it all out this week!

Considering I spend seven days a week and the vast majority of my time in the heart of downtown, and live in the urban core, yes I probably do know a little more about downtown.

Thanks to those who repped me.

OPer - You might also check out The various apartments in Germantown or any of the rental lofts in Werthan. That would also be a fairly easy bike commute to Vandy.

Good luck on your move! I'm curious now, where are you moving from? I live in Central FL and will be relocating to the Nashville area this summer. I'm stoked!

Just chiming in quick - I moved here about 6 weeks ago for a job at Vandy and live near campus on Elliston Place. There are some younger people here, but I haven't seen many that appear to be undergrad-young. More grad student young. And there are a good number of people in their 30s and up, too. I love that it's finally getting warm enough to walk to work each day. (I'm a wuss and don't walk if it's 30 or below in the morning)

I moved from Dallas so downtown seems downright close to here to me, but I'm glad I picked this area to live in for the proximity. Not sure where you will be working at Vandy, but the medical center, northern campus and 2525 building would probably be a max 10 minute walk.

tweeder03, I'll be coming from New Orleans...a place which I fear has ruined me for any other city. but I'm excited about the move to Nashville! and sunnyurbanite, good to know it's not all 20-year old wild children near the campus...I mean, that was fun when I *was* one of them but notsomuch now that I have to get up and go be a responsible person every morning!

I'm going exploring around Nashville this week and hopefully will find a great place to live. thanks to all for the info.! (I'm going to check back periodically in case anyone has additional intel to share)
