There's an article about the most iconic restaurant in every state:

And for Tennessee, they picked . . . . right here in Nashville . . .

Tennessee
Pancake Pantry
Nashville (Est. 1961)
There are actually two different Pancake Pantry’s in TN, opened a few years apart from one another (strangely, they have different owners), but the one in Nashville is our pick for the most iconic. From the hoards of people who wait in line to be seated there like extras in a Portlandia episode, to their status as one of America’s best breakfast spots, to the generations of Tennesseeans who have frequented the place, Pancake Pantry is legendary. The sweet potato pancakes with homemade cinnamon cream syrup are the flapjacks to get, though you can also go off-beat with the Sante Fe, a cornbread pancake with cheddar, bacon, and green chile cooked right into it. No matter which of the 23 varieties you choose, you can’t go wrong.

I am not a huge fan of the Pancake Pantry. I prefer the Loveless for atmosphere. Does anyone know where the other Pancake Pantry is????

I don't understand why this restaurant is such a hit.... I guess the fact that it's in a trendy area and pancakes rule helps, but still.

Ive went twice but the line was always too long so I left. That is how I discovered Mad Donnas in East Nashville which is really good!

I believe the other Pancake Pantry is in Gatlinburg.

I used to really like Loveless before the remodeling that turned it into a tourist attraction with an very overpriced menu. To me, Rotiers is still authentic old-school.

I don't think articles like this are written to gain approval from locals, they're just written as fairly-legitimate curious pieces to attract page hits

Probably true.

I also fail to see the appeal of the Pancake Pantry. I would liken it to a Kardashian...it is famous for being famous not because of any special talent. And certainly not worth the publicity. Or wait.

If I had to pick the most iconic restaurant in Nashville, it'd probably be Prince's Hot Chicken. It's not my favorite hot chicken joint, but it is iconic and certainly is a uniquely Nashville dish.

For the state, I would think of Rendevous BBQ in Memphis and maybe Gus' Fried Chicken in Memphis (both probably not the best of their particular food style, but certainly "iconic") along with Prince's, Arnold's, and maybe City House in Nashville. I haven't traveled in East TN enough to know any restaurants to be considered "iconic" although I'm sure there are some good offerings in that part of the state.

I believe that the Rendezvous should have won this award. While I don't actually love their ribs, in terms of "iconic," as in representative of the WHOLE state, it fits the bill. An immigrant family business that started out as a tavern, then grew by word of mouth after the owner realized he could make ribs in the old coal chute. It is known worldwide and for decades helped draw tourists to the area.

But maybe the Pancake Pantry IS representative of the TN restaurant scene in general right now: Long lines for so-so food I could make at home.
