Hattie B's hot is hot enough to know you're eating hot chicken, but still not too hot where you get no flavor. They also have 2 heat levels above that if you're feeling frisky. They get my vote as they have always been consistent. Just be prepared for a line if you're going on a weekend.

I think the question you have to ask first is how "authentic" of a hot chicken experience are you wanting...the real thing or a more visitor friendly option? If your visitors have just a casual passing interest in it, Hattie B's is the place to go. As others have said, it'll give them a good hint of what it's like...a fairly user-friendly experience at the restaurant, safe and trendy environs.

If, however, they want to go see the real thing...that's where you take them to either Bolton's, Prince's, or 400 Degrees. Personally, I favor 400 Degrees because the service is very good (the owner Aqui Simpson is very friendly, takes the time to get to know her clientele), there is plenty of seating, the quality is very consistent and high, and it's still a good area of town. I've not heard of Bolton's new location so maybe that is an option too...but their East Nashville original, while charming with its local flair, doesn't have much in the way of seating. Prince's is the same way and in a sketchier (but not unsafe) part of town. I also have always felt like there's a real arrogance at Prince's that somehow is taken as being "charming"...but basically unless you're a well known regular, you get pretty crappy service at Prince's. Furthermore, I've experienced some inconsistency at Prince's in the quality of the chicken and spice level. All that to say, that's why I prefer 400 Degrees.

Don....the new Bolton's location is in the back of the parking lot of the old one...it used to be a pizza place. I'm not sure if they are going to tear down that little shack in the front that has been the original? Since the new Family Wash opened next door...parking around there has gotten pretty hard to find.

Huh...I'll have to check new Bolton's out. Is there seating there now? I hope they keep the shack. It's authentic and old school. A reminder of the Old East Nashville.

Somewhat off topic, I've been to the "new" Family Wash once and have to say I was really disappointed. I expected a new vibe, but how on earth they could completely rehaul the menu is beyond me. The shepherd's pie was perfection before. Now it's just average. I wish them well, but I can't say I'll be back real soon.

So far Hattie B's is winning the poll. I do like that they have a Midtown location. I'm sure whichever of Nashville's hot chicken places we go to will be better than any version of hot chicken available in SLC, if it even exists out there. I'd love to try 400 Degrees but it closes at 7pm, and I think we're going to be doing this either tomorrow or Saturday night. Has anyone had Hattie B's banana pudding? I imagine it would be quite soothing after eating some spicy chicken.

JMT if you go to Hattie B's in midtown...don't go at prime time...it's so small in there it's nuts. The Charlotte locale has more seating. Don...I haven't checked out the new Bolton's yet...so not sure about the seating but will report back when I make it over there. I actually like the new Family Wash...their burger is quite tasty.

That's good to know. Thanks for the heads up.

I would choose None of the Above.

It's all nasty as hell, and it's an embarrassment that Nashville's indigenous food is so incredibly unimaginative and gross. It's about ten steps below that nasty garbage that passes for chili in Cincinnati.

But that's just me.

Like it or not, its a traditional "black" dish. I know this city is gentrifying at a rapid pace but lets try to keep some of its culture around.
