Hi, I'm a single mom wanting to move to Nashville with my 2 year old son. I've been to Nashville a few times and am in love with the city. I don't have any family there, but I do have friends. I feel like this is something I need to do now or I never will. Realistically, I'm only moving 7 hours away from my family, so it's not like we won't be able to visit each other frequently. I'm just wondering where I should start. Do I start applying for jobs? Do I start looking for apartments. I already know I'm probably gonna have to look into the low-income housing because Nashville is more expensive than my hometown. Can somebody help me get started on this journey? It would be greatly appreciated.

Most would advise you to not move unless you have employment secured or had 6 months of 100% living expenses saved up. Temporarily staying with understanding friends can facilitate and alter those words of advise.

How close are you to making the leap? Save up a few grand and go for it.

The problem with your plan is the current lack of affordable housing in Nashville at the moment. The city has become very popular and rents have gone up considerably. This means that public housing is also hard to come by. Do you have another city that you might be interested in as a back up?

Here is a general website listing public housing options - a call to a couple of these might let you know what you would be up against in terms of waiting lists. Would suspect people who already live in Nashville would get first priority.

Nashville, TN Affordable and Low Income Housing - PublicHousing.com

And a news article about the housing crunch here in Nashville - you really need to read it.

Maybe in a few years when your son is in school and full time child care would not be an added expense, things will have cooled off a bit here?

Always have a stable job before moving.
Look on the outskirts of Nashville, I currently live in Clarksville and Rent is cheap.
Idk what kind of occupation you are in, but my advice as a single mom is not to move away from family that are willing to help you with your children if you cannot afford to pay for housing, food, daycare, etc without the help of child support or other non-guaranteed forms of income.
