I've known since I was a child to never touch bats, either alive or dead.

Bat bites are small and easily missed.

I am sorry for that poor woman. Rabies is a horrible way to die.

Wow, I cannot believe someone could be bitten and not know it. I am not in favor of demonizing bats, because most of them are harmless and beneficial creatures. I think they eat a huge amount of mosquitos, which are a bigger danger lately than rabies.

Agreed. Every animal/creature has purpose and value. They also deserve our respect when we encounter them or enter their domain.

I find bats so creepy. They are always flying around at dusk.

We've had bats get into our cabin a few times and once we found a bat inside in the morning. We had. To kill it and take it to the county health department to be shipped to Boise and tested for rabies. I love them outside but not inside my home.

I remember learning years ago that any close contact with bats is suspect--you could be infected just by (possibly) unknown contact with bat saliva. Scary stuff.

Yes, it still is. If you wake up and find a bat in your room, it is considered contact.
