I found one by my garage one morning several years back. I had never seen a moth that large, I was startled at first and not sure what I was seeing. He was still wet from coming out and hung around for a while. He landed on a stone step and proceeded to flutter his wings from one end to the other, drying out/hardening them and preparing for flight. They live for one one week just to mate and aren't often seen. This is the only one I've ever seen in real life.

During my 79 years, I have seen about six, They are beautiful creatures.
If you drive to parking lots surrounded by wooded areas you'll often find Luna, Cecropia, and Polyphemus moths flying around the street lights and parking lot lights at night. They are all saturniids, and the larvae spin a silk cocoon.
I just got to see my first of these not too long ago. I was trying to set up my son's telescope and was looking out his window, which has no screen, and in the darkness I heard a moth fly in the window. When I finally got around to turning the light on I was greeted by one of these things hanging around on his wall. I grabbed a basket to coax it into and set it free in the front yard.
Wow! The one and only time I ever saw one of these was 50 years ago (in Tennessee!). I was only 5 and in kindergarten--but I remember it to this day.
So much more beautiful than that annoying Lunesta moth!
