OMG.... that's horrible. So they weren't near cubs or any other provoking activity? I had no idea they would do that...

we have black bears here....I've not been right up on one but close enough. One women a few miles away had both legs and both arms broken by a bb mauling....she was walking back from the mailbox to the house...luckily somehow made it inside.

I see them on my patio while looking out the window most often.

An angry human animal is top the list - even worse if it is drunk, and would probably be the most likely dangerous animal that I might encounter

Unlike Grizzlies and Black bears Polar bears are not dedicated omnivores. They are real carnivores hunting and killing their food. IMO the Polar bear is THE apex predator eclipsing all others in ferocity and size. The big cats don't even come close. An argument could be made in favor of the Kodiak bear but I believe the Polars take the title.

Polar bears are different. Their claws are designed to hook and hold and their build is designed for speed backed by massive power. Short of elephants and rhinos I can't think of an animal that a Polar bear could not handily take down. I am quite glad we don't have them in NV. They fear nothing, recognize no other authority but their own and are more than willing to enforce that worldview with all the weapons at their disposal. They are a truly frightening animal.
