don't forget to check out the towns that offer 'free land' (KS, NE, WY)

(not by bicycle )Gotta love those summer thunderstorms, and glistening snow on a moonlit night (while you count the miles to the next drop)

The Chadron/Hemmingford/Crawford area is a wonderful place to live.

I love Chadron but the weather seems terrifying. And when you add the isolation on top of that, I would think it's not a good place for people who are wimps. During the recent lengthy power outage in W. Neb., I heard that many people were going for as much as 2 weeks with no power while temperatures were dipping below zero.

That's just too scary to contemplate! I'm spoiled by city life and feeling too old for such challenges.

QUOTE Whitey: "the only thing I do West of Lincoln is hunt."

You have obviously never spent any time in Grand Island or Kearney. Kearney would probably have to be the superior of the two (good water ) and other reasons. Saying that civilization doesn't exist west of Lincoln is wrong.

Yeah, these cities are doing very well... relatively soon, they'll surpass 100,000 in population.

I grew up just a little west of North Platte. I now live in Fort Collins, CO and western Nebraska moves much slower and it's much cheaper to live. It's pretty, to some. I often miss it. My wife grew up in upstate NY (we will soon be moving there) and she's pretty much horrified of the "emptiness" of western Nebraska.

It's a good place to live if you like small towns, slow living, western history, rangeland and farmland. Not a good place if you love lots of trees.
