I recently took a trip across the country and back but this time I did not take the Nebraska route although I have in the past. Anyway I do know there has been some serious flooding in Nebraska. How is it now? Is it getting better? I hope that not too much damage was done.

The flooding is over (at least for now), but there's been a tremendous amount of damage to infrastructure. The resulting road closures are making getting around the state interesting, to say the least.

Well all those who've suffered from the flooding have got my sympathy. I recently took a trip across the country to Nevada but I avoided the route where I went through Nebraska, partially because of the flooding. I also avoided the route that went through Kansas although Im not sure if Kansas was hit by any flooding or not.

It was only this last week that the residents of Pacific Junction were allowed back in their town. It's pretty much destroyed. I heard that south of the I-680 and I-29 junction it is still closed. This is on the north side of Council Bluffs.

It's closed all the way down to St. Joseph, MO, but open south of that. Want to get from Omaha to Kansas City, you have to take Highway 75 south. And Interstate 80's still the only practical way to reach many points west of Omaha, as Dodge, Maple, and Center streets are all still closed just west of Omaha as the highways they turn into at that point washed out. (US 6 west is also now OK, so I've heard, but I haven't checked it out personally).

Pacific Junction's basically gone, yes, and so is most of the commercial district the town of Niobrara (which was flooded when Spencer Dam failed). Valley and the old parts of Belleview are heavily damaged, and so are parts of Plattsmouth and Wahoo. We'er going to be a very long time cleaning up this mess!

Edited to add: Anyone who's planning to travel around in the state is advised to check the road conditions on the Nebraska 511 highway map to check for road closures and construction work before leaving, lest they run into ugly surprises during their drive.

You're right. Talked to my son and he said the interstate is only open north of US Hwy. 34 to Council Bluffs. This is horrible.

Traffic has doubled on Highway 75 due to closure of I-29. It can take more than 5 hours to get from Omaha to Kansas City right now, so if you absolutely have to drive there from here, be prepared!
