I don't know if a reserve fund is required but 750k is excessive in itself without considering the additional funds which have not appeared in our budget.
Nearly all towns and cities in the Monadnock region have horrible beyond belief property taxes. The property taxbase is too little with respect to the amount of services demanded for. Another thing that is not mentioned too often in the area is the road networks, which often tend to be subpar at best. It isn't going to be an area that many businesses would want to relocate to anyway...

oh come now, that's awfully broad. what is behind this opinion? Sure, they aren't as low as some of the towns up north, but they're not exactly coastal town high either.
For the record, according to this week's Monadnock Ledger...
Wilton's taxes are going up due to "An increase in the local school portion on the tax rate means Wilton residents will see higher tax bills this year, despite a decrease in the town portion."
Lyndeborough's taxes have a "$1.32 jump in the tax rate this year, partially, selectmen said, because last year’s tax rate was offset by money from the town’s unreserved fund balance."
Jaffrey's taxes "$8.48, is up 3 percent, the typical taxpayer will actually pay a little less money in taxes to the town than in 2009." Jaffrey's always been a bit on the expensive side - sorta like the Amherst of Monadnock.
New Ipswich had a huge jump of 23% this year which everyone expected because of building the new school and repairing the others. We knew it was only this year, and indeed the taxes for 2010 are dropping back down 23% to about what they were: $17.90. I expect the same thing in Greenville who had the same jump for the same reason.
I like that southwest NH has terrible roads.....that's why it still looks like the southwest NH of my youth & not the mess the greater Salem area has become. I'm not against growth BTW.....but growth with some rational control. Looking like a suburb of Boston is not a goal NH should wish for.
I think it's a little unfair to cite a big increase, not disclose what it represents, then complain about the schools- which that figure isn't related to. That figure is for town costs only, which were less than 25% of our total tax bill.
Town portion went from $4.99 to $5.56; which was 11.46%. All for costs that were approved at the town meeting- and were mostly maintenance related, the operating budget actually came down, but unfortunately town hall really needs a new roof and work done to the bell tower (pay now or pay a huge bill later...it really needs it).
There is also a chance it may come down as well for the 2nd bill of the year, at the latest meeting the selectmen voted to not hire a vacated DPW position- further reducing the operating budget.
Anyway- feel free to criticize the school; but don't criticize the town itself- there is a lot being done to keep costs down and lower them when possible and our town is pretty well run.
