A little background about myself: 23 year old male, recently moved from Connecticut to the south shore area in MA for work in Boston. I am planning on moving to New Hampshire within the next two to three years. So far my research has pointed me towards Nashua. What is this city like, in terms of culture and things to do? What are the characteristics of the neighborhoods? Are there any areas that should be avoided? Also, are there any other areas in southern NH that are recommended?
I live in Nashua with my husband and two pre-school aged children. We love it here.
Neigborhoods vary. There are some very high end ones, lots of middle class ones, and then some more depressed areas like "the tree streets".
We have a good variety of stores...clothing, grocery, etc. There are lots of dining options. We have some bars and places with live music. There are numerous workout places.
There is the Nashua Symphony Orchestra, a baseball team, and the Peacock Players.
We also have some great outdoors areas like Mine Falls Park and Greeley Park. In the summer there are free concerts and movies.
As for other areas, where will you be working? What is your price range.
What are you looking for out of NH? will you still be working in Boston or will you have a job in NH?

There are some good places for local music, some place for comedy, the symphony is pretty good. It's not like Boston at all- but there is actually a pretty good bit to do. I've NEVER not been able to have weekend plans... While not as young as you- I'm also a young professional, etc.

I will be working in the Boston area. I don't commute to an office for my job, rather, I drive out to sites scattered around the Boston metro area. My job requires that I be within a two hour commute of the city though.
I'm looking for a place that has a town/small-city feel to it, with enough to do in terms of dining and entertainment, but without a high cost of living. Personality-wise, I'm a pretty reserved person and I like to keep to myself. I enjoy living simply and maintaining a quiet lifestyle. It may also be easier to state what I do not like about Massachusetts, especially the Boston area: I dislike the draconian laws/bureaucracy, the high taxes, and the snobby attitudes of many Boston-area residents.
I think you'd probably like Nashua. There are some amazingly good restaurants, and some good entertainment/social events (as I mentioned before). Likewise it's very centrally located to get to Boston, the coast, and the mountains...so within an hour or two you basically have anything you could want activity wise.
As far as being a "city" I'd say that depends on your perspective...I personally consider it more of a "large town with a concentrated downtown"...there are folks from more rural areas who don't like it (say crime wise)...but that's compared to the rural areas they live...compared to other similar sized areas in the country it's amazingly safe, etc.
Oh, there is also a fairly active "lets attract young professionals" effort ongoing- which seems to be doing fairly well and there is a lot going on as a result.
A friend of mine moved there to open her music studio and is very gung-ho on Nashua as a hub for NH's creative community. The little revived downtown is very nice, and there are certainly sufficient restaurants to keep a city person happy.
I am not trying to advertise, but my friend's music thing is quite a center for cultural activity and people from around the state who like music and cultural activities, and is right downtown. If it's OK for me to post here, it's Studio 99 in Nashua, just google it.
Oh, and my friend is newly 46 and says most of the creative community people around her are 5-10 years younger, which she finds surprising and sort of odd, but I imagine someone OP's age would like it just fine! Best wishes.
I've been following Studio 99 for a while but haven't had the opportunity to visit yet. Seems like a great project especially now with the new space.
