As far as temps go it can be a matter of taste.

But bugs? That's not even a contest, Florida wins that one hands down. Florida has GIANT COCKROACHES and lots of them. And they can fly. But skilled marketers have dubbed them "Palmetto bugs" so they don't sound so disgusting.

I had no idea why at the time the vacant lot was vacant, but it was full of plants and palm trees. One day I went to examine that place and walking unable to see the ground for the vegetation I fell into water. That was a shock enough for a yankee boy, but then something in the water began to sort of nibble on me.

I was able to see water when i was standing in 4 feet of it easy enough. I found a vertical edge which seemed real strange but i wanted out of there not knowing was was after me. Moving plants as i was I got up on the bank which was as hard and a flat rock because basically it was a flat rock..

This was a gold fish pool when the place was there and manicured. There were images of turtles and large gold fish on the tiles. What was after me used to be gold fish but were grown to be carp. Turned out to be 2 pools about 6 x 8 x 4 feet deep. The biggest bugs i saw were at Micky D's and were everywhere out at night.

Wonder what the mail man did? I had a similar problem with bees a few years back but they eventually went away.

Actually we do that to differentiate between them.. Palmetto bugs fly, roaches (aka home roaches like German) do not.

Sweetbottoms, I never knew that, and I lived in FL for 35 yrs. Roaches, cockroaches, they were all the same to me. And they were. . . abundant. What I don't get is why do you spend so much time and energy pointing out your negative thoughts about NH? Yeah, I get that you lived here. I get that you didn't like it. But from reading your old posts, you didn't/don't like FL so much either. You must know that every place has its good and bad, and not every place is cut out for everybody. So NH wasn't your cup of tea. Well, FL wasn't my cup of tea. It took us a long time to get out, but with lots of planning and saving we did it. But when I moved here, I made a decision to never slam FL, even though I very well could. It is the place of choice for many people, just as NH is the place of choice for many people. I would never think of going on the FL forum and bashing FL. It's disrespectful, Sweetbottoms. Even under the guise of wanting to tell people how it really is (in your opinion), it's still disrespectful and not nice. Let it be. No one is making you move back up here. Enjoy your beautiful state of FL and stay there.

sorry: wrong. this is from the Orkin website: "A cockroach species commonly called a “palmetto bug” is the American cockroach (Periplaneta americana). Adult American cockroaches are large and winged. Their coloration is dark brown with a cream-colored prothorax that has dark markings that resemble sunglasses. American cockroaches prefer damp conditions and often are found in sewers, woodpiles and mulch. They will fly to lights. This particular behavior is disconcerting for homeowners who encounter a large roach that flies near their face when entering doors with lights nearby in the evening. Another large species that may be called a “palmetto bug” is the smokybrown cockroach. The adults are a dark mahogany color and winged as well. They lack the sunglasses markings on the prothorax and are slightly smaller." (emphasis mine)

call it what you like, but stop fooling yourself that your 'palmetto bugs' aren't a cockroach - they are, just hiding under a different name.

0h and orkin also says of the german roach "While adult German cockroaches have wings, they rarely fly, preferring to run." I know I've seen some use wings - mostly to sorta hop/fly. but they have wings too so it's no deciding factor that A has wings and B doesn't.

I'm telling you what natives call them Not what bug specialists do. Talking to a native here when you are talking about palmettos we mean the ones that fly, when talking about roaches we mean the German kind. We know the difference, the kind that infest your house usually do not fly hence are roaches. It doesn't have to make sense to others it's how we do things I suppose.

Does this have anything to do with me pointing out the difference between palmettos and roaches when the video and thread are obviously about Florida ( or it least it took a turn that way) ......no
