That is true, although the newer Subaru automatic CVT transmissions get excellent fuel economy as well.
It would also be nice if Subaru could make a hybrid or electric vehicle. Sales are rapidly increasing and they do have a partnership with Toyota so it could be a possibility in a few years.
I came to NH in a Subaru Outback, which served me well.
Great gas mileage, and all wheel drive for the weather.
I now drive a, Chevrolet Silverado 1500, 4wd, with the 5.3l engine.
It switches from 8 cylinder to 4 cylinder at highway speeds.
Been avg. About 19 mpg so far.
Loving the truck.

Next time we meet, i want to drive that up Rt 25 towards Moultonboro if you will allow it. A mile at highway speeds to see this work is what i want.
Another vote for Honda CR-V (and/or Pilot... both of which I see all over the place.)
I wouldn't get a regular car (sedan, or whatever.)
I came to NH with a mid-sized sedan, front-wheel drive, all-weather tires. The first time I tried to make it to work in a snowstorm driving anywhere north of Manchester on 93, and the lower portion of 89, I knew I needed something else. And that was when I was living in downtown Manchester. I was from another area of northern New England, but just hadn't needed to do much routine winter driving.
We now have both a Pilot, and a CR-V, and live in a more mountainous region. Both are AWD and have been excellent in snow, although the Pilot is a bit better due to its added weight. We also once came home from vacation to 18 inches of fresh snow, and plowed 150 feet down our driveway in it (with no plow attached.) The Pilot is older and we now keep it mainly because it is a bit wider and longer - excellent for hauling lumber, etc.. It's also the one with the tow hitch. The CR-V meets most of our recreational gear needs.
We just found a replacement for our old Subaru Outback Wagon. Anyone want a set of 4 all weather on 15" aluminum rims or 4 snow tires on on 15" steel rims? New Subie has 16" wheels and comes with summer and winter tires.
