I'm originally from Brooklyn NY (hence I am a non -driver). My husband and I are considering a move to Nashua. We are currently in the midwest but are living downtown - in a mid sized city.
Is there an area where a couple (with no kids) could find a condo where one could walk to shopping, post office, pharmacy, movie theater, restaurants, etc?
Do poeple live downtown? (all the real estate seems to be out in the burbs)
No offense to suburbanites, but as a non-driver life in the burbs would be a nightmare (been there... done that...NEVER doing that again!)
After reading about the average 60" of snow Nashua gets - we're pretty decided that condo living is the right way for us to go.
Jackson Falls are new downtown condos. http://http://www.bradysullivan.com/...jackson-falls/
There is bus service but I've never used it. If you don't have to work, I think you could survive without a car (as long as you don't expect to ever leave the confines of Nashua).
Look around the Boston area, if you can afford it. You can get around all of Boston & most of the inner & outter suburbs with local bus & train service. Good luck
You could indeed live downtown and walk around. Clocktower are some NICE apartments that are walk-able to the historic downtown area. Never used the bus service around town (but you can look up the routes/schedule). There is a bus service into Boston (Express Bus).
I would personally checkout Portsmouth, Keene, and Hanover as well. I hear great things about Hanover and as a college town (Dartmouth) imagine it has good bus service as well.
Boston is the most walk-able city I've ever been to, and I've been to most major cities in the US.
It's right near the library, a Mexican restaurant and a pizza joint. It's at the north end of downtown. There is a set of train tracks right next to it, but it is VERY rarely used and has a speed limit of however fast a human walks. I've only seen the train one time in the 7 years I've lived here.
Downtown has some very good restaurants, a few bars, a beer store, a cupcake store, some nice gift and jewelry shops. I think you would need to take the bus to do grocery shopping....or you could do home delivery through PeaPod or a company like that.
