Hi, will be moving to Jaffrey area within the next couple of months. Does anyone have any recommendations for a good homeowners insurance company? Or any to stay away from? TIA

Thumbs up Liberty Mutual employs +4K NH residents

Get quotes from a few different firms. Ask each for a second quote, showing combined homeowners and auto insurance.

Some insurers have unusual requirements, and may refuse to sell you a policy based on, for example, your heating system and fuel type (wood, propane, underground oil tank, etc)

Liberty Mutual is based in Boston, MA and has multiple facilities in New Hampshire, is our seventh largest non-manufacturing employer.

If you are political, you may want to research prospective insurers, some may support causes you find objectionable.

There are quite a few to choose from but shopping around is your best bet! Like Nonesuch said, Liberty is a great option. They employ lots of NH residents, and have competitive pricing.

The best prices I have seen have been with Safeco, MetLife, Main Street, Vermont Mutual, and Patriot Insurance. (These were for homes in Manchester which being a city will typically be cheaper than a rural area)

The more expensive ones I have seen are Travelers, All State, Cambridge Mutual, and State Farm.

Keep in mind the age of your home as older homes will tend to be a bit more expensive!

Good luck and welcome to NH!!!

"Good" will depend on many factors including where you live and home construction. Each insurer has their own target market/"appetite" and price accordingly. Some prefer newer construction and won't write an old home (or charge a fortune). Some won't write log cabins while others will.

I would suggest you get quotes from one independent agent (who has access to many insurers) and a couple of quotes from some of the larger direct writers (such as State Farm, Liberty Mutual). You also should look at your combined needs. I have my insurance through a smaller regional insurer (Plymouth Rock) because the "package" discounts by including auto made their rates comparatively low.
