Inventory of taxable property PA-28 (assessors, flooring, shops)

Hey all,

Questions regarding Inventory of Taxable Property. Do all towns do these annually? Town just had assessors out last year. What types of alterations or improvements need to be listed?

Depends on the town. My town recently eliminated the inventories because they were so inaccurate, and went to more frequent assessments instead.

You're supposed to list additions, decks, new siding, interior reno's like new bath or kitchen, new flooring of a different type (like changing carpet for hardwood), finishing previously unfinished areas, new garages or permanent sheds/shops. You don't need to list anything cosmetic like paint, repairs of existing stuff like a porch railing, or replacing broken stuff like a door or light fixture with a similar product. At least that's what my town wanted.

So, why would you have to list new siding (assuming it was replaced because old was bad) but not need to list broken/bad doors? The form calls for alterations. We had dead trees removed so I assume that falls under 'deletions' to land.

If you're replacing rotten clapboards with entire new siding, my town would want that listed, but not repairs. Taking down dead trees doesn't need to be listed. Deletions are removing a deck, taking down a garage, removing an in-law apt, stuff like that. Don't worry about the form too much, just put on anything that's obvious to you in the allowed space and don't lie. Without any definitions or examples, the form is so vague as to be pointless. Garbage in, garbage out.

I do t know how many towns are still doing them but most have moved away from them in the past decade or so.
