Green Heads are akin to Horse Flies only they have green heads. They live their whole life cycle in the coastal salt marshes. They bite just the same as a horse fly for the same reasons. Green Heads have a short life span during the mid-summer months. Some years they can be problematic and other years not so much.

No matter where you live there will be some sort of insects to deal with. Killer Bees, Fire Ants, Deer Ticks, Scorpions, Brown Recluse spiders, Black Widow spiders and a whole list of others co-exist with people in every part of the country. Unless you have an acute allergenic problem with some, they shouldn't be a major factor when choosing a place to live.

Typically, after night-time temperatures rise ubove freezing, they appear through May, after the first rain of spring. They are worst in the trees + shade while hiking + not a problem at night as mosquitoes are. On the seacoast in mid-summer, greenheads (similar to horseflies but green, june-july)are far worse in marshy areas, tidal salt rivers + the bay. They take a piece of meat out of you and run, leaving a dime-sized welt. They are slower than horseflies and easier to kill. I'd say mosquitoes are the most consistant menace.
