Ive heard car rentals at EWR are not cheap either. I would check those rates out before you finalize your plans. There are also smaller regional airports like Trenton (Mercer) and the bigger International one near Allentown, PA, called ABE or whatever it is now, both about an hour drive or less.

Also plane tickets are often "funny", meaning if I want to fly from Newark to Las Vegas, it might be $200 total and you'd fly say from EWR to PHL, then on another plane from PHL to LAS, $200 total. Now if I only wanted to fly just the second plane PHL to LAS, they would charge me say $400 to fly a shorter distance.
