Are you talking about Middletown proper or Middletown Township? There's pretty much nothing in Middletown proper for less than $300K. Middletown Township yeah, you can, but it might be in the flood plains. Property taxes are brutal, nearly crippling. Ours have gone up about $4000 in 3 years. The taxes are pushing us out. We've been here for nearly 30 years (well, hubby has been, I've only been here for 8 years) and we cannot wait to sell and get out.

Someone mentioned condos--you CAN get a nice townhouse in Middletown for $300K or under.

Middlesex County has several towns where you pick up a nice starter home without breaking the bank. Check out North Brunswick and Edison i would mention for commuting purposes and having trains. Metuchen is nice as well, but sometimes the taxes will push it just out of range. Welcome to Jersey - Enjoy the ride!

If you look into East Brunswick, North Brunswick, South Brunswick, and Milltown there are a 22 - 3 bedroom homes with a garage between $200,000 and $310,000 and that have less than $6500 in taxes, which will keep you below your $2,000 budget. I feel these towns might be a good place to start looking looking into. If you don't like what you see you can always expand your search out into Somerset County.

Best of luck to you in your home search.
