I heard that they plan on extending the light rail further out into Jersey City and further north of Tonnele. Any truth to this? And if so when could it be expected.
Yes , and a few other extensions by 2020..... Construction will begin next year and it will open in 2015. There will also be a possible Secaucus / Xanadu extension after this , that depends on the success of the Meadowlands Project. There will also be a Canal Crossing & Bayfront Station added in Jersey City as part of a redevelopment project. There also might be a old Boonton line LRT link connecting Newark LRT with HBLR.
I live along the so-called 'northern corridor. The site that 'Brownstone' linked to and is much appreciated is OLD-OLD-OLD. The fact that NJ Transit does not even bother to update tells me much! There are NO signs of any preparation at the Tonnele Ave. Terminus of ANY prep. work. Bergen County was a 'ship of fools' in that they 'parceled' funds assigned to them for the so-called Hudson-Bergen light rail with the promise that work would commence in hudson Co. and soon extend to Bergen County. I fear--sadly--that most of us will be dead before anything is extended on the northern corridor! In fact, Tenafly--(the supposed final terminus)--DOES NOT WANT IT in their town.
