My wife and I are moving to West Orange and I am trying to figure out how much to budget for gas, electric and water. We are purchasing an older 3 bedroom, 1.5 bath with a modern gas boiler and water heater and new windows. Any thoughts? Thanks.

Hi Chris, i live in West Orange on a 3BR/1.5BTH house. We have central AC (always on), newer boiler but older water tank. We cook occasionally on weekdays, but very frequently on weekends. I'm on the equal payment plan and pay $223/month for Gas and Electricity. My water bill is usually between $30-40/month. Hope this helps.

PSE&G is the provider for both gas and electric in West Orange.
For my house (3BR, 2.5BA)

Electric summer: $120/month (central a/c on usually only at night)
Electric winter: $50/month
Gas summer: $20/month
Gas winter: $300-350/month (boiler is 15 years old)
Water: $40/month (year round)

As I'm sure you could have guessed, heating is the most expensive part of the utilities, so it will depend on how warm you like to keep the house during the winter.

I've paid upwards of $800 for gas + electric in winter, but mine's a 4BR with original windows and a return opening into the vented space between the floor joists. So you might want to check out the ductwork and make sure the previous owner didn't do anything stupid like that.

I pay roughly $225/month for gas+electric in the summer, with central air, $40 or so for water.

This is great info., thanks to all who responded. The house has a brand new gas boiler and water heater so I'm hoping our bills will be a little bit lower.
