"One of the men struck by bird shot during a Thanksgiving Day hunt in Hunterdon County was former High Bridge Mayor Al Schweikert. Bird shot hit Schweikert in the neck, knee and thigh. A pellet in the neck of his brother, 45-year-old Vincent Schweikert, was lodged near the thyroid, and was expected to require surgery to be removed."
WHOOPS! For the life of me I don't know how this happens. I've been hunting pheasant and other game birds for over 15 years on public land- which in New Jersey tends to be quite crowded-and never shot anyone or been shot. In any event, to all those heading out on the 3rd for the first day of buck week, myself included, be safe out there!!!
The area they were hunting in is notoriously overcrowded now - unfortunately, theres also no markers to find ppl by, and they ended up walking for 20 minutes.
Both were wearing hunter oranges, and the dogs had bells - apparently, there was a bird nearby, and they were on the other side of some nearby bushes. Definitely sucks, hope all goes well with surgery.
Sounds like a bad situation all around. At least with birdshot there's potential for a "do over." A mistake with buck loads can often be fatal.
