Any help would be appreciated!

My fiancé and I have to move out of our current apartment in staten island.

We are hoping to pay 1000 or less for 1br somewhat close to NYC

I am in the process of starting a new job in NYC, commute on the trains would be ideal.

Where do we start looking?

Does not have to be directly across from NYC, just accessible by train.

Neighborhoods? Areas?

We have a washer/dryer stackable. We would like a fairly safe area.

Thank you for your input!

Kind of tough to find something less than $1000, but I did a quick search on the BestRentNJ site and a few popped up in Middlesex County.

Woodbridge might be a good idea. Has a train station, easy commute to NYC, and is close to the Outerbridge Crossing, too, if you want to go back to SI to visit.

MIDDLESEX COUNTY - NJ RENTAL APARTMENTS

You could also look with the same criteria on Realtor.com or move.com. Woodbridge is a fairly large town with a lot of apartment complexes, so I would start there.

You maybe able to find a part house in Jersey City journal square area.
You can also checkout North Arlington, Lyndhurst or Secaucus.

But if you're going to live in Jersey City, why not just stay in Staten Island.

The other suggestions are good ones.

The commute to most places in NYC is much better from Jersey City than Staten Island. Also, I have seen JC is somewhat cheaper SI.

SOMEONE PLEASE CORRECT ME IF I AM WRONG, BUT .......

I believe it is impossible to meet the above criteria
for less than $1,000 a month. If you want accessibility
by train for less than a grand a month you might have
to consider neighborhoods that are not usually considered
the safest. One example would be the Clinton Hill
area of Newark.

This is New Jersey and any area within a zone that is
relatively accessible to NYC by train is going to cost you.

Not impossible. Very improbable, though. That's why I checked those prices in Woodbridge and came up with a couple of complexes that had 1BRs for $985 or so. I am assuming that there are no terribly unsafe neighborhoods in Woodbridge the way there are in Jersey City or Newark (using "what are my chances of not hearing gunfire" as a sort of loose criterion)

In general, your statement is correct.

Completely agree. FOr $1,000 or less, Middlesex County is going to be your best option. If you go any further North, prices for rent will go up unless you live in undesirable areas such as Newark, Elizabeth, etc. I would not recommend going that route, but you get the idea of why you need to go further from NYC.

Middlesex is an easy commute to NYC - you are looking at about 45 minutes or less depending which NJ Transit station you are using. Metropark is on all routes (express or local) and is a big enough station to provide parking (not sure if there is a monthly pass for this). New Brunswick, on the other hand, has limited parking, and a pretty awful location for its station if you ask me. I also find that the nicer places in NB cost much more than $1,000. You can look in Woodbridge, Edison, possibly Metuchen. All are safe areas with sufficient public transportation. I have family who have lived in these towns, and have never had any safety issues whatsoever. It just gets a little congested on Route 1, but you do have so much available nearby (2 malls, plenty of restaurants, retail, etc).

Anything further west or south will be a long commute, but it is possible. I did the commute to NY from Somerset County for a few months and found that it was about 2 hours round trip, door to door. I would take Bound Brook, Bridgewater, or Somerville, so this is further obviously - plus with Raritan Valley trains, you must transfer at Newark, which is a pain.

There is also a NJ Coastal line train that goes direct to NY, so you may want to look into some of the Monmouth County towns, though they do get pricy the closer you are to the beaches (like Red Bank, Tinton Falls, etc.).

Where in NYC are you going to be commuting to? If it's more convenient to take the PATH train, then the Raritan Valley line transfer at Newark may not be too bad since the PATH runs from there. However, from where I lived in Somerset Co, my experience was that there were not too many rentals - maybe more so out in Somerset [the town] or... Somerville? I think you can sometimes find for rent by owners - I know my brother and his wife rented a townhome in Somerville for a bit, but not sure of the costs.

I would also look at Bayonne--a somewhat shorter commute than Middlesex County, and feasible within your price range.
