There really is no reverse commute to this area any longer, due to all the major corporate facilities in the area. The drive from JC to Summit will be around an hour, (possibly more) not counting weather and/or accidents. And Rte 24 is notorious for tie ups which seem to happen weekly. Save yourself the headache and look into Morristown or Summit itself. You'll have all the convenience of a short commute, enjoy having more of a city atmosphere, and still be a short and easy train trip into Hoboken, JC, Weehawken, or Manhattan. (For what it is worth, Morristown is now being called "Hoboken West" by many)

Thank you. Sounds like I should stay closer to work and leave NY for the weekends. I am not a great commuter and the hour+ drive would make me crazy.

I think JC or Hoboken to Summit shouldn't be that bad of a commute. I use to live in Morristown, worked in Florham Park and now live in downtown JC. When I worked in Florham Park which is further west past Summit, we had several commuters coming from Jersey City and Hoboken. Their commute was 45 to 50 mintues by car. Summit is closer than FP so I would think you could commute by car in 45 minutes consistently. It takes me 15 to 20 minutes to travel to the Short Hills mall on the weekends from the JC waterfront.
Morristown to NYC is not an enjoyable drive or train ride for keeping in contact with friends. It is a long car ride prone to traffic delays and the train is a local on weekends which means an hour and twenty minutes one way from Penn Station.
Jersey City is a great compromise. I love JC. It has great access to the Turnpike so I can see my friends in Jersey, but I have amazing access to midtown and lower Manhattan. Also, the Paulus Hook neighborhood of JC is really awesome, not to mention the park off of Warren Street. There is a lot to like about Jersey City. I recommend it over Morristown and Hoboken. If you want to stay connected to Manahttan, forget about Morristown. I am only dinging Motown because of the distance and difficulty in getting to NY. Otherwise Motown is a great place to live.
Before you make a decision take the PATH to Exchange Place in JC and have dinner or drinks at the Lighhorse Tavern and Satis Bistro. Walk around the area, then decide if you want to move further west.

What , he should be closer to his work and not nyc....commuting by car & train is a hassle most days...but not if you live in Morristown.
If he wants to maintain friendships he has in NYC, moving to Morristown would be a terrible idea. He can easily commute to Summit from Jersey City and still have unfettered access to the city and his friends. Not to mention, the Jersey City waterfront is really nice. I lived in downtown Morristown for four years. It is a very nice community. However, I find Jersey City soooo much better. There is so much more to do and the access that I have to the city, Newark Airport, Liberty State Park, the views of the Manhattan can't compare to Morristown. Of course, he may value the shorter commute to having access to the city. However, having lived in Morristown and Jersey City, I feel that Jersey City is a great compromise. The distance from the Jersey City waterfront to Summit is just over 20 miles.
