I'm a 25 y/o female who just started a job in Princeton right off of route 1 a couple miles away from the downtown area. I'm looking to move into a 1 bedroom apartment with a commute that will be under 25 minutes or so in morning traffic. My brother suggested looking in Pennsylvania. Does anyone have any more specific suggestion or know of any good apartment sites to use?
I don't need anything fancy - looking to stay around $1000/month if possible. Just need a place where I can feel comfortable. I'd like to be walking distance from a few bars and restaurants, but it's not a necessity.
Might be tough to find something for $1,000, but you might try Plainsboro, NJ i.e. Ravens Crest Apartments.
Perhaps consider a roomate.
Try looking for apartment shares in Canal Pointe in West Windsor, lots of Princeton grad students always looking to split the rent. With 2 people paying the rent you might get something in Canal Pointe for $800 to $900 each.
I used to rent in a complex called Royal Crest in Hamilton, NJ, which is fairly close to Princeton. Actually, I just googled it and it's a 25 minute drive. You are close to the train, which is one or two stops from Princeton junction if you choose that method of commute.

Keep in mind how much PSE&G costs also.
and if you pick ravens crest, remember to also count for the $500 or so fees they will charge you (recreation fee, move out fee, dirty kitchen fee (even if you never used the kitchen) ...). Also, they will try to up you rent 20% next year. If you go there and stay, bargain with them. I was going to move out anyway, and then got a renewal at 20%. Just told them that I found something cheaper. They reduced to 10%, said same thing, they were down to 3%, and I left. They told me to call the manager and he would be able to do better. Total scam place.

Get a small place in downtown princeton (or within walking distance). You are only 25, you need to have some fun. If you do pick an apartment complex, do NOT accept their first rent offer. Even better, walk in with some paperwork from another place (do not tell them you have it, then will be looking)
Is this area safe? It seems like when I search it, it's part of Trenton which makes me slightly nervous..
It's a separate town. Has nothing to do with Trenton except for the unfortunate fact that some areas of Hamilton border it. Don't move near the part that borders Trenton and you'll never know "Darfur on the Delaware" is anywhere near you.

Do they have places in downtown Princeton for$1,000 a month?
I will say I agree with your suggestion though if it is possible.
I might suggest Bordentown City NJ also. It's 20 minutes drive from DT Princeton. You can get a 1 bedroom for under $950 a mo. Try the Chestnut Village apartments right off Route 130. Easy access to Route 206/295 to Route 1.
2 Bedrooms would be $950 there.
