Someone I know (not me, really) was just offered a job in Philly. While they don't live to far from Newark does anyone here do the commute via Amtrak.

Just looking to see how realistic it is and any problems.

Amtrak schedule shows anything from 53 minutes to 1 hour 20 depending upon the train used.

I also realize that the monthly rail ticket would be about $1314.

Unfort, while cheaper NJ Transit is around 2 hours each way and that's not in the plan for him.

Thanks

Depending on where he lives, he might consider driving to Metropark to do it.

Metropark would cut the train ride down (and cost $200 a month less), but then would add driving about 1/2 to get home plus adding parking expenses now. The other way from Newark would only be a 15 minute bus ride to the train station.

Guess I need to sit down with him and review all options.

Thanks

It may be worth moving closer to Philadelphia if that is an option.

This.

When you factor in the transportation cost of commuting from Newark to Philly ($1300 using Amtrak, but also a few hundred by NJT/Schlepta)...
And when you factor in the lower housing costs in the Philly area relative to Northern NJ...

Unless the job is very temporary (a couple of months max) I'd move to the Philly area.

Moving is not an option at this time and he might be able to walk from the philly train station. I'll have more info tomorrow.

even if its cheaper from metropark you will still have to pay to park the car. so it really wont be that much cheaper. its a hard nosed commute. this is far fetched but can he stay in an efficiency motel or hotel for some weeknights? or one with cheap weekly rates? that would suck but may be cheaper. i myself may be faced with an opportunity for a greaty job in NYC soon and i live in Bucks County PA (10 min from Trenton). long commutes are stressfull as hell.
