My Long Term Plan to improve 2 key River Corridors , Storm Protection , Transportation and land reuse suggestions...Google Maps can't fit everything so some things are left out.
Newark-Belleville-Kearny-Harrison
-At the mouth of the Passaic River a Tidal/Flood gate would built to keep Storm Surges from Flooding Newark and Harrison
-Riverfront Park/Walkway from the Ironbound to Belleville
-Riverfront Walkway from Red Bull Arena to Hawthorne
-Create a Light Rail line from Broad Street Station in Newark to Great Falls in Paterson Following the Newark Branch
-Elevated portion of 21 torn down and replaced with an Urban Boulevard similar to the West Street south of 54th Street
-The Highway portion of 21 would cutback to Exit 8 in Nutley , the Urban Boulevard would be 2 lanes for regular traffic and a Bus lane for local and express buses
-Highway 21 would be renamed River Boulevard , a walkway would run from on the River side similar to West Street , with fishing piers every Major Intersection , Grafton Ave , Mill Street and William Street
-The Area around Chester Ave East cleaned up and developed into a Mixed use site around the Chester Ave LRT stop , this site would also have a small Marina
-Highway 21 would be realigned in Belleville from Bayard Street to Irving Street in Newark , this would open up prime riverfront Real Estate ,the Highway would be down graded to an Urban Boulevard
-Old Boonton line Bridge would be replaced with a newer bridge that would allow for Light Rail and a Pedestrian crossing linking Newark with Kearny
-The Light Rail line would run from the Proposed Kingsland Kearny Station to West Orange via NS Orange Branch and Old Boonton line
-On the Kearny Side , Bergen Ave to Belleville Turnpike would be designated a Parkland , with a Riverfront Trail or walkway
-Restore Kingsland Branch Service and add 2 stations to redevelop blighted areas of East Harrison and Kearny , Service would run from Suffern,NY to Hoboken or New York Penn Station on an Hourly basis.
Clifton-Passaic-Rutherford
-Old Passaic line in Rutherford would be converted into a "Highline" and a Bridge built over the Passaic River connected to the Riverfront Walkway
-The Area down by Passaic Community College would be cleaned up and Dense mixed use developments would interconnect with the Riverfront Park , the opening parking lots would be consolidated into one garage
-The Depressed sections of Highway 21 in Passaic would be capped with a Park
-The Old Passaic Branch between Paterson and Downtown Passaic would be turned into a Rail Trail
-The Various Mills and Warehouses in Passaic along the River would be renovated into Apartments , lofts , Office Space and Shops
-Urban Boulevard US 46 through Clifton , part of this already done , add space from a Bus Rapid Transitway. Encourage "Main Street" type TOD along the Transitway in Clifton.
-Encourage TOD around the Clifton & Delawanna Main Line station and Proposed Light Rail stations at Bloomfield Ave , and Mount Prospect Ave
Paterson
-Convert Highway 20 in Paterson from I-80 Interchange to 25th Street into an Urban Boulevard with Bus Rapid Transit , stations would be placed at 19th Ave , Park Ave , Broadway (Route 4) , East 33rd Street ,5th Ave , 3rd Ave , TOD would be encouraged at every stop , Buses heading Northbound would continue onto the Hawthrone Transit Center or Downtown Paterson , Buses Heading Southbound would either head onto Route 80 to NYC , Newark via 20/21 or US 46 to Little Ferry / NYC local.
-Fishing Piers would be built in Paterson along the Riverfront Walkway at Park Ave and 40th Street
-The Various Factories and Warehouses along the River in North Paterson would either be torn down or renovated into Lofts and Apartments
-The North Paterson Train Station would be restored to absorb the increased Commuter load and attract Real Estate Investment to the Northern section of Paterson
-A Slopped Levee would be built from Great Falls National Historical Park to North Straight Street on the Downtown Side to prevent Flooding from Heavy Rains upstream
-A Slopped Levee would be built from Broadway to 6th Ave Bridge
-The Land Between Great Falls National Historical Park and Broadway would be designated a wetland and any buildings would be bought up and demolished
-Great Falls Historical District needs to be created and take advantage of the Park , trail and Transit , renovate all the Mills and warehouses in that neighborhood into Lofts , Retail , hotel , and Office space
Hawthorne
-Rebuild the Hawthorne Train Station into a Transit Center , Servicing the Main/Bergen County lines , along with Future Sparta line to Sparta/Warwick and Cross County LRT to Hackensack/Jersey City. Route 20 BRT would also tie into the Transit center along with local buses.
-Redevelop the land near the Transit Center into a Mixed Use development with Parkspace
Hackensack-Little Ferry-River Edge
-Upgrade the Pascack Valley Line from East Rutherford to New Bridge Landing , double track the line up to New Bridge Landing , add Hedges along the Hackensack segment to keep out trespassing , Establish a Quiet zone in Hackensack , upgrade all crossings to 4 gates to reduce the amount of accidents. High Level Platform , Wood-Ridge , Essex Street , Anderson Street and New Bridge Landing , along with River Edge , Oradell , Emerson , Westwood , Park Ridge , Pearl River and Nanuet stations in conjunction with planned Downtown TOD in those towns.
-Redo The Streets around the New Bridge Landing station in anticipation of the various New Bridge Landing TOD Projects
-Build a Hackensack Riverfront walkway from New Bridge Landing to the Meadowlands
-Encourage TOD around Anderson Street , Essex Street Pascack Valley line Stations and the Proposed State Street LRT, Prospect Ave LRT Stations
-Encourage Dense Development in Downtown Hackensack along State , River & Main Street
-Urban Boulevard US 46 through Little Ferry , include a Bus Rapid Transitway which would run from the I-95 Interchange in Ridgefield Park to Willowbrook Mall in Wayne. Encourage Mixed Use TOD along the Transitway in Little Ferry.
-Build a Pedestrian bridge at the Teterboro site to allow the residents of Hasbrouck Heights to access the Teterboro Station , beef up sidewalks to tie into the station and nearby TOD
-Add a Flood Gate along the Hackensack River south US 46 Bridge , at the Overpeck Creek mouth , add a levee system to protect the residents of Little Ferry , Hackensack and Moonachie from Flooding and Storm Surges.
-Ban any further Development in the Hackensack-Meadowlands Marshland/Watershed , this would allow for Mother Nature to spread out the force of the Storm surge and effects of a large storm or Hurricane.
Wood-Ridge
-Complete the Wesmont Station along the Bergen County line
-Complete the Wesmont Station TOD
Secaucus
-Encourage TOD around Secaucus JCT on the abandoned warehouse sites
Fair Lawn
-Convert Broadway into an Urban Boulevard with Bus Rapid Transit , add Stations at , Route 20 , Boulevard , Fair Lawn Transit Center (Broadway Train Station) , 26th Street , Fair Lawn Parkway and Yerger Road , Buses heading Eastbound would express to NYC via Graden State Parkway or Local to Hackensack and Upper Manhattan. Westbound would continue to Great Falls National Historical site with Stations at , Route 20 , East 33rd Street , Madison Ave , Carroll Street , Memorial Drive , Five Corners , Downtown Paterson (Main Street & Market) , Historical Mills District , Paterson Great Falls National Historical Park.
-Encourage Mixed Use TOD along Fair Lawn Ave around the Radburn Station ,create a quiet zone at the crossing.
Saddle Brook-Rochelle Park-Maywood
-Build a Transfer Station between the Bergen County line and Proposed Cross County LRT at Midland Ave , encourage TOD near the station
-Upgrade the Pedestrian infrastructure in the town
-Add a Station at Mayhill Street along the Cross County LRT , encourage TOD around the station , upgrade Mayhill Street to handle increased volume
-Add a Station at Rochelle Ave in Rochelle Park along the Cross County LRT , encouraged TOD around the station
-Add a Station at Maywood Ave in Maywood along the Cross County LRT
Transportation & Misc
-High Level Platform the following stations ,Lyndhurst , Kingsland Clifton , Passaic , Delawanna , Both Glen Rock Stations , Radburn , Broadway , Garfield , Rutherford , Wood-Ridge , Teterboro , Anderson and Essex Street , New Bridge Landing , River Edge , Oradell , Emerson , Westwood , Park Ridge , Naunet and Spring Valley for faster boarding and ADA access.
-Traffic Calm all Major Streets and Roads in Business Districts and Dense Residential areas to reduce speeding and improve pedestrian safety
-add Real Time Bus Info on all Busy Bus lines
-Sync Traffic signals in Downtown areas to reduce congestion
-Put all Utilities Underground in Built up areas to reduce the damage by storms
