Greetings,

In towns with multiple elementary/middle schools, how does one discern which school a home would be "zoned" for? I've tried doing searches online for different towns and maps, but don't see anything. In some towns, there are wide discrepancies in schools, so I wouldn't want to move forward just based on what the listing said w/out seeing something "official" from the town.

I think you can reasonably rely on the listing as you begin your search. If you get serious on a home, call the town/school to verify.

NJ has a real easy way of determining which school your child attends. 95% of the time it is the school closest to your house.

Not necessarily, there's always a dividing line somewhere. When I was growing up in Hamilton (17 elementary schools, 3 middle schools, and 3 high schools) I lived on the east side of the line and many of my friends lived on the west side (across the street-the street was the line) of the line, so we went to different elementary schools. We all went to the same middle and high school though.

Did I not say 95%.

Phone the Board of Education for the town & ask if a specific address is within their district. If so, they'll be able to tell you exactly which school(s) are zoned for that addess.

I would be willing to bet somewhere in the school districts website there is a district line map, (PDF) or application, put in address and it put up map and/or list of the schools that address goes to.

Also, if you really care which school (I would like to see what school district it really matters in), remember they can rezone at any time and you cant do anything about it. It all matters how many kids are in each school

I don't envy modern parents...I would lose sleep over all this house hunting nonsense. Not only do you have to worry about affording and finding a house in a good town, but also on a good street that has the better of the elementary schools.

Correct. I know West Orange does this. I'd bet many districts do the same.
