Planning on moving to Washington boro in the coming months and will need to commute to Fairfield, NJ. Trying to decide between taking rt. 57 to 46, and then getting on 80 near Budd Lake, or instead taking rt. 31 southbound down to 78, and then 287 up to 80 in Parsippany.

I have to be at work by 8:00, but I dont mind arriving somewhat early if it means dealing with less traffic.

Thanks for the help!

The northern route is about ten miles shorter, but traveling either route takes about the same time... assuming traffic is moving at its posted speed. During the morning commute, you choose your poison!
• Along the northern route, I-80 from Wharton through Parsippany can be more like a parking lot than a highway.
• Along the southern route, I-287 through Morristown and Parsippany is also a stop-and-go nightmare.
Try them both, and also learn some of the county road alternatives (middle routes) so you're not stuck without options on highway 'incident' days.

I commute from that area to Morris Twp. I go 31 South to 78 East to 287 North. For me it's ten times better than taking 80. What time will you be commuting? I'm on the road by 6:15 am. The worst part of the commute is 31. It's stop and go at some spots through Hampton/Glen Gardner. 78 and 287 are not an issue unless there is a bad accident.

57 doesn't go to 46 directly. From the Boro, you are better off taking 31 to 46 than taking 57 out to Mountain Avenue and then to 46. You also have the option of getting 80 from 519 in Hope (exit 12) or 517 in Allamuchy (exit 19). I don't think I would take 46 all the way to Budd Lake.

I used to commute from Washington to Basking Ridge. I always did 31 to 78. 31 moves slow but you would be leaving early enough so that it's not too terrible. It's worse in the afternoon. You should avoid the bad traffic on 78. I suggest leaving a little before 7 am. I've never taken 80, but my mother takes 80 in the morning and says it's terrible. 287 north in the earl a.m. isn't bad, either. What time do you get out of work? I always found that if I left a little before 4pm I would avoid most traffi con 78, any time after 4pm & 78 is barely moving.

Thanks for the replies. I'd probably be leaving around 6:30, but that's just an estimate right now. Leaning towards taking Rt 78 because I've heard about how bad rt 80 can get.

Usually I leave work around 4:30.

I-78 from Pennsylvania to Newark and I-287 North of 78 are no picnic. Your commute will end up being a big "U" shaped route with lots of extra mileage for no reason. Getting onto 78 west from 287 south on the return trip will be an absolute nightmare. I like the other ideas of others that were suggesting scenic back County roads or State highways over I-80.

Like I said before, it all depends what time you are traveling. I get on 78 at about 6:40 in the am and there aren't any issues except if there is a big accident or a few weeks out of the year when the sun glare is bad. Regarding getting on 78 from 287, again no issue for me. I leave work at 3:30 and get to 78 in about 16-17 minutes. No issue getting on at that time. My typical commute time is 50 minutes. The worst part of the ride is 31 for sure.

Trust me, I commuted on 80 for over 11 years when I lived near Hackettstown. It was 100 times worse than 78.

If you get on 80 from panther valley/allamuchy around6 their shouldnt be much traffic.Theirs also a way to go over a mountain by hackettstown and dumps you by morristown. My friend who lived in Port Murray use to take it and said it took roughly 35 -40 min to get to the morristown area but I cant recall the roads.I guess check a map out of the area
