My BF and I are going to NYC in March. We arrive at EWR on a Friday night, at about 10:30p. I want to plan our commute into Manhattan appropriately and as stress-free as possible. What's the best route to get to Manhattan (will be staying at friends in Hell's Kitchen), considering the late PM time we arrive?
I've only taken a shared-shuttle bus from Manhattan to EWR once about 4 years ago, and that was my natural thought to use again (only reverse). I'd like to avoid taking a taxi due to the high expected cost. Does Uber pick up at EWR (I know they aren't allowed to pick up at the airport here, but wasn't sure if that was a national thing). Lastly, when we booked our flight there was something mentioned about a Airtrain Newark that runs 24 hrs? Is that the best option? I'm seeing that is only costs $12.50 to get to Penn Station and about half an hour. Do I need to buy a ticket in advance or just pay upon arrival at a booth?
There is an automated airtrain that runs overhead all through the airport terminals and parking lots and ends up at a train station on the regular NorthEast US train corridor railroad tracks, that is a passenger station with NJ Transit service and possibly Amtrak also. The main RR line is just the other side of US 1&9 highway from the airport, that is where the AirTrain takes you.
Anyway there are automated NJ Transit ticket machines in the airport terminals just before you go up the escalator or elevator to the AirTrain and also in the walkway where you get to the NJ Transit station.
So you just buy tickets for Newark Airport to New York Penn Station or you could get off at Newark Penn Station if you wanted to take a PATH subway direct towards downtown Manhattan.
Check websites for NJ Transit and PATH for details but it's fairly straightforward. AirTrain to Newark Airport RR Station, NJ Transit train to Newark or New York City, etc.
Newark Airport Express offers fast, easy, convenient express bus service between Newark Liberty International Airport and New York City.
Buses are only $16 one way or $28 round trip and arrive at each stop every 15 minutes during the day, 365 days a year (departures every 30 minutes before 6:45 AM and after 11:15 PM)!
When you board a Newark Airport Express Bus, you will get a relaxing, stress-free ride on a climate-controlled motor coach to or from Newark Liberty Airport.
On the trip to Newark Liberty Airport, customers may board a Newark Airport Express Coach at three nearby midtown Manhattan locations:
New York stops:
Grand Central Station (41st Street between Park and Lexington avenues)
Bryant Park (42nd Street and 5th Avenue)
Port Authority Bus Terminal (41st Street between 8th and 9th avenues)
At Newark Liberty Airport coaches may be boarded at:
Terminal A (Located on Level 1, outside at bus stop 5)
Terminal B (Located on Level 1, outside at bus stop 2)
Terminal C (Located on Level 1, outside at bus stop 5 & 6)
Does anyone know if UberX picks up at the airport there? Here in Chicago they can't pick up at either airports but I wasn't sure if it's the same for all airport locations.
Take the automated train to Newark, change at the station to either NJ Transit or the Path into NYC... Cheapest option...
