So I got stuck at Port Authority one night a couple weeks back. I walked to the Path and it was locked/closed...the worker said it was shut down for the night (this was a Sunday night around 12:30am). I was freaking out bc I'm new to the area and didn't know any other option.

I walked to a NYC cab and asked how much it would cost...he said $80...I said "no way that's too much"...and he said "well thats what it is"...I then asked another guy and he said $75..so I took the offer. When we got to Hoboken I tipped him too. And now I feel so stupid and ripped off considering EWR which is MUCH further away is only$20.

Is this a common scam? Or is this normal

There is no way Port Authority to EWR is $20.

This suggests $55.

PATH never shuts down. Maybe just that station?

I agree it's highly unlikely that the entire Path system was shut down that night. If that ever happens again make sure you clarify with someone if it's just one particular station that is closed or the whole line. You probably could have just walked to another station.

Cab fares outside of the 5 boroughs are negotiated and the drivers are not required to make the trip. Drivers charge higher than their normal rate because they have to pay the toll on their way back and because they are not permitted to pick up riders in NJ. All that being said, 75 is way too high for midtown west to Hoboken. I would never pay more than 50, and 35-40 seems more reasonable. That's about what I paid for similar trips from manhattan to Jersey City.

You could have taken a NJT train to Secaucus or Newark and a cab or bus to Hobotown from there too.

I don't think Uber would've charged you this much.

I had a similar situation maybe a little more than a year ago. I was an idiot and didn't have a proper smartphone with Uber on it. I was out in Stamford, CT and had to get to Rye Brook, NY. The driver charged $50 just because it was across state lines. The distance is only about 10.5 miles. I felt hustled that day for sure. The train ticket all the way to NYC from Stamford is a mere fraction of that.

That's a weird story. PATH runs 24/7. They do close some of the station entrances at certain times, but there's always at least one way in. For example, at the 33rd Street station, the entrance attached to Manhattan Mall closes at 9 or 10 pm every night, but the entrance in Greeley Square is open all the time.

$75 for a cab to Hoboken sounds a little high, but not completely out of line.
