Where to live near Princeton? Husband works at Carnegie Center
Couple in our 50's, no children, no pets, must rent due to home foreclosure. We want neighbors, so not too far out in the country.
We have 2 choices;
-Princeton , 2200 sq ft - 3 bd town home in Princeton Green off of Canal Pointe. $2900/month
-Ewing , 2800 sq ft - 4 bd house with manicured yard in the Delaware Rise/Mountain View area by the Delaware River. West of 95, between 95 & Washington crossing Bridge off of 29. $2400/month
Is the place in Princeton worth $500 more per month? Or would you go with the Ewing place?
Things to consider.
The townhome in Princeton Green is physically in West Windsor NJ, a quick trip across Rte 1 (on Alexander Rd) to Carnegie Center. Very close to Princeton for a bit of night life.
Mountainview home in Ewing, a 30-40 minute drive (Rte 1 or 206) from Carnegie during rush hours. More "out in the country, hilly" very scenic.
Princeton Green, very close to shopping/restaurants (walkable to Market Fair), close to Trader Joes, Whole Foods, Wegmans, Target WalMart Quaker Bridge Mall.
Ewing, you would have the 30 minute drive into West Windsor for the closest shopping (off peak).
Do you need 2800 sq. feet? Would you be responsible for yard maintainance?
$500.00/mth is $6000.00/yr.
I'd pick Princeton Green for the proximity to everything.
Is there a reason not to consider Plainsboro, Hamilton, South Brunswick? Might be a lot cheaper but equally good towns for renting and easy & quick access to Princeton.

Thanks in advance for all advice given
Not meaning to be rude, but if you just lost your home due to foreclosure than can you really afford that kind of rent? Do you really need that much square footage? You could pay much less rent by choosing an apartment on the same street in West Windsor (i.e. Colonnade Pointe or Canal Pointe.) Husband would be right across the street from Carnegie Center.
-we need a 2 car garage, which eliminates an apartment & many other options
-we are willing to pay these prices - income is high but credit is shot. The Princeton place is about 26% of income, the Ewing is about 22%
-as we get older time is more important than almost anything. We are willing to pay more for time.
That being said, we don't want to be stupid either.
We like both places. The Ewing one is very affordable for a very nice home. The Princeton home is at the top end of our price range but is it worth living in Princeton? Maybe?
PS : our goal is to save as much as we can for retirement but at the same time we do not want to sacrifice too much to do it.
If we asked a person dying of cancer what they would do, they would pick Princeton.
If we asked someone facing many years of life ahead of them with little money saved they would pick Ewing.
We fall in the middle.
Like all of us, I guess the question becomes one of balance.
We are hoping to get more insight about each of the areas & quality of life they will provide.

Sorry its your money to spend, but isn't a quarter of income too high to pay for accomodation, especially rent? I have never paid more than 15% of income towards accomodation cost, own or rent.

We are from CA so our knowledge is limited.
Again, thank you for the advice
I also work in Carnegie and we're also looking for a place in Princeton. Ewing is really nothing at all like Princeton (or West Windsor, which is where Canal Pointe is). If you like relatively crowded areas but nice downtowns, Princeton/WW is great.
If you want to get more house for your money while keeping your hubby's commute under 30 minutes, look at Newtown PA- it's just across the river and is right off of the highway so the commute time is very short, but the houses are huge there for the same price.
We want the downtown and the extremely short commute (including via bicycle!), so we're trying to buy in Princeton.
Thank you everyone. I think we will go with the Princeton townhouse. The commute issue may be a problem with the Ewing house.
I guess we are willing to pay more for time & convenience & a town (Princeton) within a mile from the home.
I have been looking around & to my surprise $2900/mo for a 3 bd townhouse with a 2 car garage is pretty inexpensive for Princeton. Most are over $3000 with the 2 car garage.
Shocked!!!! But now satisfied with our decision.
