Hello,

I am a NYC commuter looking into renting in Hackensack, specifically a Hackensack garden apartment on Essex St. I am one block from Summit avenue and one block from what used to be the Essex Street bridge over Route 17. Is this the bad area that I keep reading about on the threads?

Also, is there still a NYC bus that runs on Essex St? I see the 164 and 144 sign but the schedules are quite confusing, especially now that the Essex street bridge is closed/under construction.

Any suggestions/opinions would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks!

I wouldn't want to live there. Being that close to rt. 17 - it's more of a commercial area than residential - lots of traffic around, probably noisy, and IMO probably not as safe as other areas. But if you've seen it and you are OK with it, then go for it. There are worse areas of Hack. (on the other side of Summit Ave., near hospital / Central Ave.). But there are other garden apartments in Hack. that are in slightly better areas, even on Main St. between downtown and Rt. 4. I'm not sure about buses, but I'm sure one runs down Essex. Buses run on most of the main roads in town.
