Well, there's a slightly cheaper way:

You can take the Northeast Corridor Line to Newark Penn Station. From there, you can take the PATH to Lower Manhattan and then catch the Bronx-bound (4) or (5) trains up the East Side.
This will cost $54 per month for the PATH pass, and $193 for the NJT rail pass, so it'll be $247 per month rather than $308.
There
is another way, but I think it'll take too long: You can buy a Metuchen-Elizabeth pass for $116, and it should be valid on one of the buses from Elizabeth to Newark at no extra charge, so you'll save money that way, but again, you'll be increasing you commute time.
