I am planning to move to East Brunswick. I do not have much idea about the place but so far the study I have done from my side, the town seems to be a good one to start a journey for family of 3 with a kid 4 yrs old.
Can anyone of you please help us sharing your views on couple of my questions below that will really help me to make my decision.
1. How is the school system? are the schools really Blue Ribbon. I heard this is the only district that has 11 Blue Ribbon schools.
2. Commute to New York. How is the commute to New York.
3. My budget is around 370 K - 380 K and preferably I am looking for Single Family home and on the newer side. say build after 1990 or so. If not I am OK with Townhome as well but new . Is it possible to get a decent house in my requirement.
4. Is it really a drawback that to take Route 18 for all commutes. I had travelled to this route multiple times but not really had much issue. I stay in Edison so quite frequent take US 1. I did not find any major difference.
5. How are the options for Local amenities and Extra curricular activities like say Kids Karate, Soccar, swimming club, health club , parks etc etc.

I don't have kids but it's good. Hordes of Asians, so how bad could it be.

About an hour by bus to Port Authority

I think so but on the cusp.

Where are you going? If you take the Turnpike, you're fine. In general, yes, Rt 18 is terrible.

Basically strip malls, malls, fast food, restaurants, it has them all. Convience is good if you're driving. Walkability is horrid.
I never cared much for East Brunswick because it's your typical suburban strip mall town with little character. This is true of most Middlesex County towns. I do like Highland Park though. Lived there for many years.

Highland Park has nice character, as does Metuchen.
Lived in East Brunswick about 28 years ago for four years. Really liked the community! Friends of ours moved from their only two years ago and the schools are excellent, all around good community.

I believe that there are two "Park and Rides" available for express bus to Port Authority, one by Exit 9 on Turnpike and one on Route 18.
