Add the increased policing and you have to stop listening to people's tales of how it was so long ago and actually look at the numbers.

Yeah I have family in Long Island that was telling all of the negative stories and stuff (which every city has) but the research that I’ve done is that it’s definitely getting better in regards to crime. Thanks for the input.

I wouldn't put Newark and Montclair in the same category.

They are two completely different environments.

Montclair is a nice, large suburb that has affluent areas and a downtown that has upscale restaurants and shops, as well as some less expensive residential sections.

Newark is a rundown, high-crime city full of poverty with a couple of sections that are "OK". Newark made the list last year as one of the "Murder capitals of America". Montclair had 3 murders in 2017. Newark had 69.

You are trying to make a sweeping evaluation of a large region, but you can't do that in NJ. You have to look at each town individually. You will often have posh, wealthy towns right next to very poor towns.

Your budget ($700) is unrealistic. In a good town, rent for a studio apartment will be in the $1400 range. You are looking at several roommates or an illegal basement apartment in a firetrap building in a bad area. You might want to rethink your move.
