I have been browsing through this forum for a while now researching different communities in New Jersey in the NYC area. I've heard about some good communities on here as well as reading the page about them on wikipedia. The problem is that most people ask about good neighborhoods to buy a house or condo in, I am more looking to rent a townhouse, apartment, or house. I have a young familiy we are both in our early to mid twenties and our oldest child of two is going to be five. The communities that seem interesting to me are(sorry there are so many) Montclair, Summit, Union, Cranford, South Orange, Clifton, Passaic, Rutherford, East Rutherford, Maplewood, Harrison, Hoboken, Weehawken, Edgewater, Secaucus, Fort Lee, West New York, Union City, Cliffside Park, and Morristown(eventhough it seems like it may be too far.) I am looking for a realitively safe middle class or working class community that has good transportation to NYC, I would prefer train but I guess bus will do too, and not be too expensive. Since my kids are young I am only slightly concerned with school districts mainly just elementary. I liked what I heard so far about these places and want to know the positives and negatives of them and which ones best fit what I am looking for or if anyone knows of another town that would fit. All info will be helpful.
Cranford or Westfield has everything that you're describing. What is your price range? and When are you looking to move?
I am looking to move in about a year, but I want to have a better idea of where I want to start looking soon so I can get up there to check some areas out this summer and fall. I am looking for about 1500 and down, maybe alittle higher if it is really worth it.
ha, i guess we have the same issue. I posted not too long ago asking for great communities for young families. Me and my husband are mid 20s and have a son that will be five in sept. He works in Brooklyn and we live in linden (his commute is 45 min). My son attends private school, we were thinking of putting him in public (he would have been assigned to school 5 but i didnt care for it). Union Township is pretty nice and has good public schools, look more into that town. We were hoping to rent there last year but it fell through. The train system isn't the best for commuters. Hoboken is more of a yuppie town, great for the young social crowd not really a family place. Im a big fan of South Orange, maplewood, montclair..really nice places and diverse. Most of the places you listed are nice it just depends on your priorities and in which order they fall. For instance, for us linden and rahway run about neck and neck but the train schedule in rahway is better so it has the edge.
There's a brand new apt building being built in Bloomfield next to Brookdale school. Across the street is the NYC bus. Bloomfield also has a train station. I have no idea what the rent will be. Another option is Rutherford. Good schools, and there are a few apt buildings near NYC transportation. good luck!

Wow, that is a very similar situation. How long does the train take to nyc in rahway? I've been hearing that Montclair is expensive is this true?Thanks for the information.

In leiu of Montclair I would highly recommend neighboring Verona and Cedar Grove (great towns with bus service). Summit/Cranford are nice IMO. Maplewood/SO/Union not my cup of tea - procede with caution here. For Rutherford/East Rutherford try including Hasbrouck Heights, Lyndhurst, and North Arlington into that mix as well (trains and/or buses). In leiu of Morristown look at nearby Madison (another great town). Hope this helps. Good luck.
I believe the train ride into the city from rahway is about 45 min. Im not sure what your budget is but right now but im guessing we are overpaying for a place in linden (1500 w/utilities) and could probably get something comparable in montclair. My issue is finding a diverse city with other YOUNG families. it seems like we will have to choose between a place that has alot of young people versus somewhere with older families. Granted we had a child much too young but i would love to find a place where people have kids in there late 20s early 30s that is affordable. im living in la la land though
hmm... i'm guessing with 2 kids you're going to want a 3BR. i think it's going to be tough to find a 3BR in a nice area for 1500 or less. nobody seems to have mentioned this....
